I still don't get this argument. How is it "less complex" to manage 109 engine when you have the hidden emergency timer and hidden combat power timer? It is as simple as engine suddenly blowing up on the newbie without any explanation of any kind.

However if you take a yak, you can run it 100/100 100% of the time without any worry. Any time your mixture is wrong technochat tells you. Every time you are overheating - technochat tells you. The only hidden parameter is the supercharger gear which you need to click at basically fixed height. And forgetting the supercharger does not cause your engine to blow up either....

I somewhat agree, the 109 will always be "simpler". But the yak is hardly difficult...
You can firewall it all day, dive climb at full prop pitch, it never has to be changed actually. The rads can remain fully open untill you get into combat, where it takes abit for practice to keep the engine from getting too hot if you want that extra edge in performance by closing them. However the game kindly lets you know when to open them again, so meh.

Combine that with an airframe that performs any manouver with supreme ease and has fantastic energy retention, really really good crate.

Ok, fair point. I hadn't thought of it this way because I'm used to the continuous/combat/emergency mode thing. I'd guess a complete newbie would be confused at first by the engine failures. Having the climb rate advantage to put yourself in an advantageous position without having to think about much though is newbie friendly though.

Again I disagree on this point. Majority of the newbies do not have the discipline to properly execute BnZ tactics that 109 aircraft require to be victorious. The "newbie" thing is to get excited when you are on someone's 6 and keep turning with the target while trying to get the correct lead. Yaks are much better at doing this than 109s.

Newbie flying a yak has much more potential than the same newbie flying 109. If newbie happens to have E advantage the yak will let him exploit it much more so than a 109 which simply locks up. You also do not have to concern yourself with the very slow stabiliser trim too.

Yes soviet aircraft do require you to have more buttons mapped, but technochat does a good job letting you know which lever to pull when. 109s do not have as many buttons, but flying 109 correctly requires significantly more skill than a yak in an equivalent situation.

No matter how much I fly the soviets now, there's something I miss from 109s too much: that insane and ridiculous climb rate. Anything more beautiful than out-climbing raging yaks who cant follow you up to 5 or 6K of altitude.

Actually, I find soviet engines easy to handle, I dont know why people says it's complex. Sure it's more complex that just moving one thing (109s and 190s) with your hand, instead you have to care about radiators and such. But I usually let the radiators at 70-80%, and almost full RPM and full throttle in realistic mode, but never damaged the engines yet. Maybe its just me, but I feel flying a 109, and even managing its engine (specially E and F series) its no way easy.

The engine management itself only really gets tough once you get to the Allison. Still it does require some portion of your attention, especially if you fly without technochat. And leaving the radiators/cooling flaps on one setting thinking you’re covered is a bad idea. Fully opened radiators can shave anywhere from 25 to 50km/h off your top speed and significantly hurt your acceleration too. The La-5 is one of the fastest planes on the deck, but with cowl flaps fully open you’ll be lucky to catch up to a Bf 109E7.

If only we had  a server-wide setting so flying without a technochat did not feel like an intentional handicap you are handing out to your opponent for free.

After I went over to vr and turned all the hud stuff off, I enjoy the game a lot more. Nothing left between you and the aircraft in a way. Having it as a server setting would be good. It would prevent the perfect precision by %, and force you to get a feel for it and check the dashboard.

I think the easiest planes in game are some of the twin engined birds we have, a20, bf110, pe2.  They are easy to take off in (if not insanely overloaded), manage their engines, good preformance, have a guy or 2 watching 6 for you, and one engine can usually even take a noobie back across the front line. Every plane has tricks and quirks, that's why I enjoy this game, it's fun to fly everything, nothing is frustrating to learn, and I dont have to read more than I did in college to learn to get off the ground (I'm looking at you dcs!)

The A20 isn't too hard to fly but you have to close the inlets before takeoff or it will create drag and shake the plane aggressively. The pe-2 is very easy! Flat out, just open the coolers and remember during landing; it's nose heavy!
