I think you'd see a marked improvement with a better cpu, and I saw you fixed the boosting issue. When are you getting that new rig setup? OK, So I have just stepped up from a 4970k with 1866 mhz ddr3 ram and 1080 to a i9 9900k with 3200mhz ddr4 ram and 2080TI Initially my frame rate could drop below what it was on my old system. Old system never dropped below 45, new one dropped into high 30's. Took a night of sleeping on this to realise that I had not enabled the game boost and xmp on the MB, so my CPU was initially an even worse bottleneck at only 3.6 ghz I think. After enabling the boost, I think I get something like 4.8ghz on all 8 cores. I'm not sure which mechanisms are supposed to increase up to two cores to 5ghz, or even if IL2 triggers them. As a VR user I just tend to watch the ingame FPS which I can now say is a definite improvement. I still see as low as 45 FPS from time to time, but I'm spending a lot more time at or around 90FPS. Also seen improvements in xplane 11 where my minimum FPS with heavy cloud seems to have doubled. Not tried DCS yet. Summary: Even though I am a bit disappointed that ASW on occasion still seems to kick in, the VR experience seems to be smoother overall. not noticed any stuttering which I sometimes had with the old system. I have only really tried MP environment so far though, but even with a high player count on Berloga - mid 50s I had no problems, and FPS never dropped below mid 40's. I play with balanced settings. Not exactly sure what this does, but the environment seems to look better on the new hardware, with trees seeming to be rendered further than before but that could be my imagination. I hope to start using OBS and the oculus mirror to make some vids. Will link one soon with the FPS counter on so that you can get an idea of how it performs Edited November 12, 2018 by =FEW=Herne
A_radek Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 Herne, if you someday want to dig deeper in to this jungle - CPU-z is a small, simple and free application that can tell you what speed your memory/cpu currently are running, while gaming. And congratulations on your new rig.

IckyATLAS Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 I am afraid that the 5GHz thing is a little of the marketing stuff. When Intel mentioned 5GHz without details, one would think that indeed the 8 cores run at 5GHz. Yes it is possible if you have a cooler/chiller the size of a fridge with a few kW of power. CPU technology has still to improve a lot on consumption reduction per core, before we can run at such frequencies as stock values.

I'm afraid not, it's easily achievable with a noctua NHD15 even,(this cooler on par or slightly better than AIO's if you get it at a good voltage. The chiller was a 24 core running 5GHZ across all cores. Edited November 12, 2018 by icecream

I need to be convinced. I used many NHD14 Noctuas and they are excellent but here it is too much. The problem is not just increasing voltages, it is that the consequence of increased voltage will bring the total wattage of the CPU to dissipate to extremely high values. You are right on the 24 Cores issue, but even with 8 I wonder that it could work. Edited November 12, 2018 by IckyATLAS

dburne Posted November 12, 2018 Author Posted November 12, 2018 By default the i9 9900k has two cores ( rather than the usual one) that turbos to 5 Ghz, or 5.1 can't remember which. There are reports of some successfully running that cpu at 5 GHz on all 8 cores. I look forward to trying mine out when I finally do get the thing lol. I have on pre-order with Amazon, but signed up also for auto notification at Newegg. Received notification they got some in today while I was out, by time I got home they were all gone. Scalpers I am sure.

Both are pretty high end, but both sites end up with ~65C temperatures for all cores 5.0 ghz AVX workloads. And here's the Noctua U14 doing only marginally worse than the Kraken X62, and this is on Threadripper: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3089-threadripper-cooler-comparison-full-coverage-liquid-vs-air
