What's the trigger for "mission accomplished" in career mode?

In my IL-2 career, there are occasions where we have to attack a front line position and, even after everything is destroyed, we have to circle for a solid 6-8 minutes before the game tells us "mission accomplished". Even the AI planes don't know what to do and just circle around without attacking anything.

On other hand, there are some scenarios where I get the "mission accomplished" trigger as soon as we arrive on a site, even if we only killed 3 or 4 units while there is still a solid 25-30 units still on the ground, which makes the whole thing very anticlimatic and frustrating, as getting there often takes 10-15 minutes and you can't usually attack sites on your own as the AA will just chew you up.

What triggers these "mission accomplished" popup that makes everyone go back to base? Is there a way to control it?

Thank you

Attacking the designated target usually does it. With some missions you only get the mission accomplished message once your flight has loitered a certain amount of time. If I’m out of ammo I just go home and land, accelerate time and wait for the message before exiting the misssion.

It's primarily based on hitting the target area and a predefined amount of time elapsing. For bombing missions, it's a simple matter of releasing your bombs over the target.
