Well, fudge.

So what's plan B?

That's a 3Billion investment down the drain.

Meh

Oculus have been doing nothing to advance enthusiast PC VR since CV1 was released.

It was clear to anyone reading the signs that Oculus (Facebook) had zero interest in advancing the PC VR experience any time soon.  Their recent push to consumer non enthusiast VR was done to push VR away from PC.  The fact is once Facebook took over they decided the reliance on expensive PC hardware as a handicap to making profit.

Hoping this maybe is not the full story, will see.

They had some pretty nice stuff in the bucket for next gen PC-VR.

Edit: The author of that article may me somewhat "jumping to a conclusion".

"Facebook subsequently denied this report, with a spokesperson telling Variety: “Yes, we are planning a future version of Rift.” "

Of course they are. Saying anything else would be like holding up a “go elsewhere we don’t want money” sign.

I honestly believe there isn’t much there for us to hope for. Facebook is not about expensive enthusiast equipment. If anything, and eventually, I asume the rift 2.0 will be a slightly improved (odyssey+), cheap but solid quality unit. Meaning it will stay what it is now rather than go boldly where no hmd has gone before.

This doesn´t surprised me. I don´t think they will cancel Rift2, but next year the top star is Quest, and you will have that in the every day soup.

And when the Rift2 will appear, some point at 2020, it will not increase resolution or FOV dramatically. But it will be a good product for sure.

I have sadly understood that the priorities of Facebook were not the priorities of former Oculus (putting PC at first). So, this is bad for us flight simmers wanting always more resolution and FOV.

Meanwhile we will enjoy other options in the market like Pimax5K+ (still to test myself if better than Rift) or Odyssey+ or XTAL or any new HTC/WMR/Huawei/LG/Pico headsets or our old but still good Rift.

Not completely bad for us flight simmers.

Oculus/FB has been throwing a ton into R&D for VR, undoubtedly more than anyone else by far. Not to even mention the ton of money they have been throwing at software development for VR.

As long as they keep PC-VR as one of the legs of their three legged stool, it can only benefit from any successes from the other two legs ( Go and Quest).

We as flight simmers then, stand to benefit from Oculus overall strategy - certainly they would not survive just catering to us. Nor any VR hardware company for that matter.

Now if they do kick out one of the legs ( PC-VR), then that certainly would change a lot especially for what we do. IMHO the VR community as a whole needs Oculus to keep driving things forward which fosters more and better competition, which is great for the industry overall.

I said bad in the sense that FB steer the Oculus ship towards mobile. Oculus alone, with additional funds from investing companies, would probably were able to produce a decent Rift2 along this year. The problem of Mark Z. is that he is too much obsessed with the Social stuff and with "connecting people" (and keeping their data!). So, low and cheap graphic quality VR (GO and Quest) is a perfect vehicle to gather millions of people. It is hard for Brendan Iribe to deal with that, he was not even appearing in OC5 just to say "hello, I am working here in nice stuff". Imaging, being Iribe, to work everyday with a guy who dismiss the heavy PC-VR business and put Rift priorities at second plane. Oculus was exclusively born from PC, and they were always at the lead edge in every aspect (resolution, FOV, ergonomy, etc), but that´s not true anymore.

Speculation but I agree with your thinking Chili. Of course their aim is to have a vr headset in every family home rather than in the hands of those few gamers that already own a powerful computer. And while the future of vr will no doubt be untethered hmd's I'm still very sceptical towards the quest as it just seems much too early technology wise for this type of device. Facebook knows what they are doing so I'm probably just underestimating the average consumer cravings for cool new gadgets :)

I have been interested in this product for a while now, waiting out what next generation will demand of the computers hardware. From what I can see , flight simulator VR users count a great deal of the consumers, but are less verbal and active in VR forums and groups. I never believed flights consumers could mount any huge target group, but it does. Maybe Facebook is not aware of this

I have been a satisfied user of the CV1 and never once regretted buying it, but I just don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about a CV2 for the PC user.

No discussion about its direction or what a CV2 might include such as improved clarity or FOV increase, etc.

Possible 2019, maybe 2020 delivery date or then maybe not at all, Oculus seems to be more focused on other areas of VR development with a  possible CV2

at the very-very back end of their plans.

Oculus stated more to come on the next generation Rift in the next few months.

I am like you, keeping a skeptical eye, hopefully they will continue on with PC-VR. I am still hanging my hat with them, as I love the Rift and it has just been so rock solid for me., using it daily.  Sounds like they are going to turn their focus to it after the

Quest releases.

My first choice for a new VR would definitely be a CV2 so hope they don't postpone it so long that it gets eclipsed by another unit.   Unfortunately I am concerned that may occur if a product like the Pimax can mass produce the results they have promised.

I’m glad there’s competition and options. If Pimax produce something wonderful that’s great for us consumers—I can jump ship to Pimax, liquidate my Rift and be happy with new gear. But that’s only IF an alternative is actually better. I still think Oculus/Facebook have loads of money and R&D and will likely produce the best headsets but competition is good.

Facebook also has lots of money invested in the development of games, apps, ‘home’ features and so on. Money they won’t get back if people start abandoning ship and go for a pimax, odyssey or else.

I also consider the rift a brilliant device, quality all the way through. But If chili, as a backer, gets a pimax soon enough and gives it a thumbs up as a rift upgrade for il2 I won’t miss my ‘home’ environment ?
