VR_Noob Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Hello, I am returning to Il-2 after some years of absence but I am completely new to VR. Installed my Rift today and the process worked quite ok. My Steam BoS installation asks me if I want to run the VR-version and everything starts up fine. Both in the Oculus demo and in the start screens of BoS the head movement is very smooth, no problem with the tracking, I can move between menus, change settings, everything. The tracking sensor is on the table in front of me, some 70 cm away, , same height as the Rift. The trouble starts when I start flying in-game, after I hit the P button to unpause. My virtual head immediately moves around like crazy whenever i make the slightest real head movement. I'm talking millimeters of movement and I am looking in all directions until the view gets hooked at some in-game barrier, like straight down into the seat pan or right shoulder backwards. If I use the mouse to control head movement it is much smoother and slower but the moment I move my head the problem starts again. The result is a disaster and the game is unplayable for me. How can I get rid of this? Is there any setting in Oculus or in BoS that can alter the sensitivity of the head tracking? Or did I miss something in the setup? Any help would be highly appreciated. Regards,
Alonzo Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 That's very weird. Can you try turning *off* mouse look? You shouldn't be using any kind of mouse look with the VR headset. It sounds like the game might think you're trying to use mouselook + VR headset and that's a weird combo.
dburne Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Yeah something is definitely amiss there, the Rift should be smooth as butter. Alonzo may be on the right track there. Also did you go through the complete sensor setup in the Rift? It will let you know if sensor needs to be repositioned. Are you using the two sensors it came with or just one?
VR_Noob Posted October 22, 2018 Author Posted October 22, 2018 The Rift is ultra-smooth during its demos. Only in BoS the game-internal view goes crazy. BTW, is it normal that in BoS 'VR' mode i see only the curved virtual desktop? Because in this desktop I have at least three different pointers: a blue dot that smoothly follows my head, a mouse pointer that lags behind the blue dot and sometimes turns into a blue ring and a crazily jumping additional mouse pointer that is tied to my head movements also, but with a crazy sensitivity. This seems to be the culprit in game because the speed of these pointer jumps correlates to the in-game view jumps. As the problem already seems to be present before flight, i.e. in the BoS operning screen and disabling every single mouse function in the Pilot Head Movements section just freezes the head completely, I have the impression that I am just playing a non-VR-supported version (staring at a big non-moving screen), because that's how it seems to behave. On the other hand Steam asks me to choose when I start the game (VR/nonVR-option) and I always pick the VR one. I would have expected some toggle in the BoS setup to enable/disable Rift control of head movements in-game but I haven't found such function yet. Anybody knows if this exists?

If you mean that you see the game on a virtual screen, then no, it's not normal. Maybe there's something wrong with the way Steam starts the game in VR mode. You normally enable VR in the options in the game, try doing that instead. Edited October 22, 2018 by coconut
VR_Noob Posted October 22, 2018 Author Posted October 22, 2018 Wowwww, it works now!!! Steam Launcher was the problem. Launching via Play button doesn't work with me even when I choose the VR option the menu offers me. It's a dud. Right clicking on the line item under 'VR' also gives you the 'launch with VR' option, only this one works. And the result is just stunning. Slight nausea because of the motion realism, but the overall impression is just wow. What a great game and what a beautiful immersion. Thanks for the help! 1
