BornToBattle Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Naturally, for us here the “PC” connection in itself means flight simming, and since the new generation doesn’t include an updated Rift but the “less powerful” but slightly higher resolution Oculus Go, can anyone shed some light on the Go and where it stands in relationship to PC gaming at all? Oculus touts it as the future in which VR is headed, compact, no wires, which is great and also the fact that it doesn’t need a PC to run software titles let alone a high end PC, but it sounds like in so far as making a connection to the PC in order to enjoy the PC titles out there I can’t find anything touting anything which I’ll now call “backwards compatibility” to the PC. Sounds like Oculus has kicked VR and PC gaming to the curb as their own website mentions nothing of it as well and gone for the happy 12 year olds and the social media aspect of sitting around playing with dragons, etc. In other words, augmented reality. I was sitting back hoping that after using the Oculus 2.0 in demos that the screen door effects and lower res operations would be all but handled with the announcement of an Oculus Rift 3.0, but seeing the man at the helm says the Oculus Go is the future of VR I guess that says it all. Not saying it couldn’t in the future, but highly doubt it as of course this is a market driven product and the Go is the future with no attachment to the PC. I do do realize that there are software bridges to work between the two but as for me, I was hoping for a new Rift model being wireless and higher resolution and it didn’t happen.
dburne Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 The Go is not a PC platform device. Oculus is going after three segments now of the market. Mobile ( Go ). Untethered stand alone ( Quest). https://www.oculus.com/quest/ Rift. (PC). Do not get the first two confused with what we do here (PC-VR). The Go is good for watching vids, some experiences, etc. The Quest ( coming in a few months) will be good for the same, along with some less intensive games made for it. It will not have quite the computing power or graphics power for what we do with combat flight sims, but it is a stand alone computer integrated into it. The Rift CV1 is still quite good , unfortunately the next gen Rift timeframe is still somewhat unknown. We know of some of the tech they are working on for it that is exciting, but still a bit of a ways off. A_radek Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Was reading some article the other day stating Oculus vr hmd lineup consisting of the Go, Quest and Rift is now complete. Next step will be new versions of each. Here's hoping the rift gets some love first. Can't remember what article, it was however quoting a representative from Oculus

The Quest is not due out until like the Spring of 2019 - hoping all attention turns to Rift after that. Probably sometime mid to late 2020 for next gen Rift would be my guess. From a business perspective, Oculus is probably doing the smart thing. Not only capturing the majority of the VR market but also creating new markets with a broad product line. And waiting till they have the tech for us to be able to actually run the next gen Rift product with our systems with good performance and significant gains in visuals. Foveated rendering, eye tracking, varifocal displays, etc. We know these are now being worked on by Oculus. From a selfish standpoint, I wish all attention was on PC-VR.
BornToBattle Posted October 19, 2018 Author Posted October 19, 2018 (edited) Okay, good news then, and thank you! I’ll forward this along to my buddies too. At least it’s something to look forward to with the Rift. I just saw the Quest and thought...ugh...in relationship to our aspect of it. Sounds like it will be a while until we see an advancement of the Rift. I really don’t want to bite until the next gen comes out. On 10/19/2018 at 6:29 AM, dburne said: Yeah me too.
