Oculus Rift VR & Steam interface problems since newest Oculus update

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I've had ongoing problems since the new upgrade at getting the game to work .If I try to start the game through Steam several things might happen..in no particular order :1.) it might start properly, but my Steam menu will say its running after I exit game.2.) It might start & my monitor screen will show its in VR mode, but I see, with goggles on, my home screen with music from BoX.3.) It might not start at all & I get an "error in Loading" box screen. In every case I get a "running" indication on my Steam library menu list ( the only way to stop this message is to reboot Steam. )I can reboot Steam & Oculus & occasionally the game will start properly, but no guarantee. Starting Steam or Oculus first or second seems to make little difference, but I may be wrong about this. I keep thinking there might be a start setting in Steam or Oculus I have overlooked..always possible I guess, but everything worked fine most of the time before this new fancier Oculus upgrade. As you might imagine this is driving me crazy , because it often takes 15-20 minutes to get what ever combination it takes to get the game going..So any ideas ..please?

Had similar issues and ended up creating a shortcut directly to the il2.exe file in steamapps/il2/bin (something like that). This way you need to "login" every time in il2, but its still the fastest and most consistent way to get going for me as I don't have to retype login/password and the VR checkbox in il2 stays checked.

Sometimes, though rarely, I end up with that oculus hud thing overlay while il2 is running in the background. Meaning it's necessary to find a controller looking through the nosegap and get rid of it. Life used to be so simple with the admin trick.

Anyone with a better way please chime in.

Good suggestion to start game with a shortcut (send to desktop) of the IL*2 exe file instead of the launcher. It can be found in IL2/bin/games and has a red star as does the launcher. Launcher updates the game with recent changes but continues to run in the background as you play. You only need use the launcher when there is an update then close it a fly the sim using the shortcut.

When you first start the sim in VR hesitate a bit before putting the headset on to minimize Oculus Home and Steam VR overlay. After that you should be good to go. There's a setting to have Oculus Home move to the tool tray upon start in the Oculus Tool Tray. - https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/5okoju/oculus_tray_tool/

I am not sure I understand where these overlays are coming from for some...

My procedure:

Put headset on, Oculus Home starts.

Launch the game ( either from IL-2.exe on desktop, or usually from inside Oculus Home).

In either case, the game launches with Steam VR with no issue, no overlays.

I have been doing it this way for several months in the Rift Core 2.0 / Dash.

Hi dburne.

How do you select the game from inside Oculus Home?  It seems my mouse and arrow keys are disabled.

I use my Oculus Remote.

Touch Controllers work also.

Thanks dburne.  I was having some of the issues mentioned above when starting Steam then selecting BOX.  Someone on the forum (probably you dburne, Chili or Fenris because you guys are always on top of this technical stuff) recommended removing the run as administrator from Oculus and my problem was gone.

Not sure either.

If I start from a shortcut steam created, or from inside oculus, game defaults to 2d mode meaning I have to go inside settings, check the "vr" box and restart game. Every time.

I've used core 2.0 while it was still in beta and did not have these issues.

Sounds like perhaps might be a Steam issue then in how it launches the game.

I do not have the Steam version of the game.

Yes that's it then.

Let me add: In my VR Home Library I have two Steam icons that may or may not have some influence on startup. If I hit either one it appears to continue to load ...forever.Since the Rift upgrade I no longer have BoX in the Library.I’m not sure if this matters as I could never start from this site. I do have a BoX startup icon on my desktop which is tied to Oculus and up to this time appears to have no better success rate than going through Steam. Most of the time it starts the game in a standard no Oculus mode.

I will try to load game by the game exe., but  SvAF/F16 can you tell me which “vr” box you are referring to?

Did you ever set Oculus to " Run as Administrator", where the Home software would not start when you put headset on?

Sounds like you maybe did not, if not no need to worry.

If you did set it that way, you would need to revert it back as the new software is required to get the display into the Rift.

Using the Game exe. seems to work! I do have a question;  while using this method of startup does the Oculus Tray Tool & its settings still work ?

Yes. I always launch the game with IL-2.exe.

Put a tick in the "audio confirmation" box in OTT, and you will hear confirmation when the profile is being applied.

Blitzen, by “vr box” I meant that VR checkbox inside il2’s graphics settings.

Glad it worked for you.

Yup-Good to go & OTT working too! Thanks guys would that all problems be so easily solved!?

I have the issue after the last steam up date of now having the oculus home overlaying the game. I use the DK2 and have no controllers for the oculus home, (is there a way to use a mouse to control things in oculus home?)

anyway if I close Oculus home the game plays on the monitor and is black in the headset ( it used to have just one image on the monitor before the update but now  it changed to  the 2 images) .

any help would be appreciated

I had to reinstall directX, and some redist files 2015, and 2012. visual studios.

the steams new VR update fubared a lot of stuff..

any way was wondering whats everyone think about the FaceBook isn't going to now support a new version of the Rift or upgraded generation?

9 months ago they were gunho on a new generation now it looks like a lost cause?

Rift founder has left FB just so you know.

Nate Mitchell ( one of the original three) has denied that new versions of  Rift would not be continued on.

"A lot of questions today about the future of Rift — we're still driving forward on the Rift/PC platform with new hardware, software, and content.

Lots of great stuff in the works. More to share in the months ahead."

Note that if you start the game from the exe, it won't recognize content purchased through Steam.

I also find that if I start the game through Oculus Home I get the issue where it shows the stereoscopic view on the monitor but the headset just shows Oculus Home. I have to start the game by opening Steam, finding the game, right clicking and choosing "Launch in VR". It's annoying but I can't find any other way to start in VR with all content recognized.

I do have everything going with the" exe". method of start up,including all the extra planes etc., but I may have gotten them directly through the IL-2 store...

Posted

I should add: I think it's only Steam content purchased since June or so, when they changed the way that account-linking works.

I noticed the same : I recently bought first on Steam 2 additional planes (Spitfire and G6) and didn't retrieve them in IL-2 as I launch it through a shortcut I created pointing directly the IL2.exe. I asked refund and bought again from the web site and voila, I'll fly them tonight.

As said creating the shortcut prevent Steam to be loaded. I also use the trick to put my headset after IL-2 launch, so no Home loaded, and bypass also SteamVR thanks to the OpenComposite DLL.
