ShamrockOneFive Posted October 8, 2018 Posted October 8, 2018 Hey folks, I'm in the market for a new GPU. I've been soldiering on with my GTX 960 2GB for a while now and while it's done very good service with the IL-2 series and others... I'm getting frustrated with the less than smooth gameplay I'm starting to experience all across the board. As a few have said to me over the last year especially... 2GB of VRAM is not enough. So I'm looking at my options right now and trying to price cards out with the aim of finding the best bang for the dollar. I'm looking at the 1070, 1070ti, and 1080 as options. Prices have dropped a fair bit and these are now semi-within my budget range. A 1070ti in Canadian Dollars tends to range from $500-800 depending on the brand and feature set. I could go above or below. My question to some of you is these three model ranges in nVidia cards... anyone have any thoughts on best performance for the dollar range? I'm also looking for a card that has a fanless option when not pushing things. I love the fact that my GTX 960 makes no noise while I'm browsing the web or working on a document.
OrLoK Posted October 8, 2018 Posted October 8, 2018 I'm loving my EVGA1080oc. quiet/silent(?) when doing normal stuff. fan kicks in when in VR. pre TI, so could be cheaper?

I was looking at EVGA (I have an EVGA 960)... $745 is the cheapest 1080 in CDN. I can get the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti SC GAMING for $560. It's a bit of a gulf between the two... and maybe not much difference in real world performance on a 1080p display.

If you are going to continue gaming on a 1080p monitor, the 1070 should serve you well.

Starting at around 520-635 CAD, the 1070, 1070ti, and 1080 are now very similar in performance/dollar. It's only when you move to higher or lower tiers that you start seeing huge price/performance differences. Therefore, the cost heavily depends on particular SKUs from AIB suppliers and day-to-day price changes. 14 hours ago, ShamrockOneFive said: It's a bit of a gulf between the two... and maybe not much difference in real world performance on a 1080p display. The 1080 will generally be less than 10% faster than the 1070 Ti. The cards are extremely close in real-world performance. The Ti is absolutely the best choice if there is a substantial price difference (source). Regardless, all three cards will have no problems with 1080p at maximum settings (~200% faster than GTX 960). In fact, substantially weaker cards would still handle Il-2 very well, especially if a few settings were lowered. Edited October 9, 2018 by Mitthrawnuruodo
w00dy Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 (edited) For gaming at 1080p any of those cards will be fine, I have owned a 1070 and currently have a 1080. My 1070 could play this game at 1440p at a 100+ fps no problems at all on ultra settings. Only swapped the 1070 for 1080, as I had the chance of a new 1080 for £410 back in May. I was also thinking of getting VR, which I thought the extra power of the 1080 would help. Also what CPU do you have? As this may limit your GPU anyway. Edited October 9, 2018 by w00dy 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted October 10, 2018 Author Posted October 10, 2018 I have a "Skylake" Core i5 6600. It's a solid CPU and when I bought this PC it was pretty much top of the heap. The Core i7 6700 had a 1fps difference in nearly all gaming benchmarks... maybe a bit more in flight sims. I've got 16GB of DDR4, a bunch of SSDs, and a Corsair RM650i PSU to power it all. It's a decent system. The weak spot since I bought it has always been the GTX 960 which had been doing extremely well actually but now its feeling the age a bit. Decided on the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti FTW2. Pricing made sense from Newegg and the added quietness on this card fits my MO for gaming (I want it to be quiet :)). Let you guys know how it goes after I get it.

At the 1080p resolution, you will be CPU-bound sometimes, however. The 6700 is virtually identical because it is only 100 MHz faster; the crucial single-thread performance is nearly identical, giving it about the same gaming performance. Only the unlocked CPUs well above 4 GHz are substantially different. Regardless, nice upgrade. I don’t know how you managed to create all your impressive pieces with the 960; I’m sure you’ll accomplish even more now.

My next piece is probably going to suffer a bit for having the 960 but I'm doing my best to mitigate.
w00dy Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Yes you will be fine with your 6600, shame it's not the K version. Nice choice on the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti FTW2, you can't go wrong with that. 1
