Hiya

Some pics taken by David John Hope shared on Facebook page The Luftwaffe in Colour during WW2. I live not 20 minutes away and was last there when I was a child. I need to go back again. The 262 is evidently the last intact 2-seater night fighter in existence.

Someone pointed out that it was a bit crazy to have something like this in South Africa. Not sure how I feel about it but I think it would be safer to be looked after back in Europe.

I will go as soon as I can to get some more information and pics.

Crikey. I think there is one at an IWM site, but they are very rare.

How come it ended up in Cape Town (lovely place, my friend lives there)?

It is in Johannesburg. Evidently a SAAF pilot had good connections and had it moved here. Not sure when.

Cool pics.

Lots of SA pilots were in WW2 so no surprise that sombody over there went to the trouble of making a collection, although that 262 is clearly very rare. It would be interesting to know it's story.

"After completed trials, Red 8 was shipped to South Africa on 23 February 1947, arriving at Cape Town on 17 March. Amazingly, it survived in storage until the late-1960s when it was taken over by the museum."
