FlyingNutcase Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 (edited) Hi Hardware Nerds (compliment :-D), I need to upgrade my work laptop (MS Surface Pro 4) and was going to get a functional little 13.3 to 14'ish incher but I'm wondering whether going for a 15.6" gaming laptop would allow for a little casual IL2'ing (my desktop is dated and out of action anyway) or perhaps even a 17". I would use it for video editing as well. So is IL2 with a 15.6" an enjoyable enough experience? Is there any real benefit with getting a 17" with the same 1920 x 1080 resolution? Would either need an external monitor to make it a descent experience? Here are some 15.6" candidates ($NZ): https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN7155104/Acer-ExDemo-Predator-Triton-700-PT715-51-70Q2-GTX1?type=ex-demo https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN51552/Acer-Nitro-5-AN515-52-GTX1060-Deluxe-Gaming-Laptop https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN31751/Acer-Predator-Helios-300-PH315-51-78YV-GTX1060-Del https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKASU5040006/ASUS-FX504GM-EN006T-GTX1060-Deluxe-Gaming-Laptop-1 https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKMSI8750631/MSI-GP63-Leopard-8RE-254AU-Gaming-GTX1060-6GB-GDDR https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKGBM156803/Gigabyte-Sabre15-GTX1060-Delux-Gaming-Laptop-156-1 c And some 17" candidates ($NZ): https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN715002/Acer-Aspire-A717-72G-798U-GTX1060-Deluxe-Gaming-La https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN715002S/Acer-Aspire-A717-72G-798U-GTX1060-Deluxe-Gaming-La https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKASU703024/ASUS-ROG-GL703GM-EE024T-GTX1060-Delux-Gaming-Lapto https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKGBM176803/Gigabyte-Sabre17-GTX1060-Delux-Gaming-Laptop-173-1 https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKACN51751/Acer-Predator-Helios-500-PH517-51-GTX1070-Premium Apologies for the link assault. Mitthrawnuruodo Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 (edited) Get an inexpensive laptop without discrete graphics for work and build a proper desktop for gaming. You’ll get better performance and eventually save money by upgrading the desktop instead of replacing entire laptops when they become obsolete. If you must get a laptop, I’d recommend a 15” over a 17” with other specs being equal. At 1920x1080, the increased size doesn’t really make things look better. The GTX 1060 graphics you’re looking at are adequate for that resolution. If if you end up needing an external monitor, the desktop option becomes even more attractive. Make sure to to buy something with high single-thread CPU performance. It’s crucial for Il-2, but many laptops struggle with it. Look at benchmarks and reviews rather than specs, because thermal throttling can really kill real-world performance. I’d also strongly recommend a 120 Hz display.
