-=PHX=-SuperEtendard Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 Both the T-34 and the Sherman are similar in their early and late variants. The Sherman has a bit more frontal armor, and the T-34 more side armor but that difference doesn't matter that much as both are similarly vulnerable to the same guns. Both the early and late guns had similar AT capability, although the 85mm was better in infantry support than the 76mm (that's why while the T-34/85 replaced completely the T-34/76, there were still 75mm Shermans alongside the 76mm ones late in the war). The Sherman has much better crew comfort, but a taller profile than the T-34. One nice feature of the late Shermans is the wet ammunition rack so it made ammo fires/explosions much more unlikely.
LeLv76_Erkki Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 Also the crew could actually see out of the Sherman and they didnt need to be midgets

And the T-34 got the cuppola earlier than the Sherman, in 1943. In Tank Crew we will have this T-34/76 with cuppola, while the Sherman is the 75mm M4A2 without it. But in the T-34/76 the commander is the gunner as well, so it will get tunnel vision and lose SA when engaging a target. The 1944 76mm Shermans got one with the new turret, and the T-34/85 finally had a three man turret with a dedicated commander in his cuppola.
Clyde_McCloud Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Beautiful video! The P51 has been my favorite all time plane since I was about 6 or 7 years old, back then many were still flying too! It's a beauty of a plane in every aspect! I agree with whoever 1st posted about its spirit carrying on in the F16 as well. I've always seen a connection between the 2, and the scoop is one.

I think certain aircraft have a timelessness about them. The P-51 and F-16 are those types of airplanes. They both still have a modern look about them. It is hard to imagine the F-16 design is nearly 50 years old. Edited September 7, 2019 by Rjel 1
IckyATLAS Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Great. Thank's for sharing. Excellent introduction to my trip to Reno. Six days to go ?

Unfortunately for the Japanese it was still the same airplane inn1945. Are you suggesting that, meaning in all theatre's, the pto, or carrier based planes? I can go with carrier based planes, and would probably agree with the pto with the planes in theatre in 1942. However, overall, definitely not, fw 190 a3/a4 is clearly a better combat plane in 42, as is the 109 g2, and the early spit mk 9's with the merlin 60 iirc, which entered service in 42, just to mention a few of the top of my head.
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 (edited) Look at it this way. The IJN put forth a design tender for a single seat, cannon armed fighter, with extreme maneuverability, extreme range, that can operate from a carrier, with a very good rate climb, and oh, you only have 900bhp to work with. Considering all that, the A6M was a brilliant design. Edited September 8, 2019 by BlitzPig_EL 1 1
