PerfectionMan Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) Hello gents? . My friend and I just entered into IL-2 Sturmovik about a month ago. We are both big fans of DCS World but due to the lack of WWII aircraft and bombers, I became interested in iL-2 and we bought Battle of Bodenplatte and Battle of Kuban (for the bombers mostly), my friend going along with me so we can fly together! We first flew in Single Player mode and really loved the fact that we could get in the air in a relatively short period of time and didn't need to immerse ourselves in manuals for a few weeks just to start the aircraft. HOWEVER, once we got into multiplayer servers we were dropping out of the skies shortly after take offs with various engine failures. I guess there are a lot more key bindings that we need to familiarize ourselves with but we are not having much luck finding good YouTube videos that walk us through what one needs to do to keep in the air in multiplayer servers. Any help would be much appreciated. Edited October 1, 2018 by PerfectionMan 2
SAG Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 most (populated) MP servers are in expert mode. That means you need to manage things like RPMs and OIL/WATER radiators depending on the plane. take a look on the key bindings for anything regarding those radiators or COWL shutters. Open those up to 100percent and see if your still blowing your engines. Something else you and your frind might be doing wrong is that there are some planes that you just cant simply go 100percent throttle for over a couple of minutes. in the briefing screen ther is a specs tab where you can check your engine limitations, 1
US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 If you go to the Manuals and Guides section of this forum, you can find engine specifications which will help you with your engine settings. These will also be on the specifications tab right before you begin flight. 1

Herne Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) After you have picked your AC and spawned press "O" for oscar to open your map. on the right hand side you should see the mission briefing, at the top is a tab called "specification". There is a load of interesting info here regarding the AC you have spawned, but the most useful things here are your Nominal, Combat, and Emergency settings, along with supercharger gear change alt if applicable. Hope this helps Edit: Try to keep your oil and water temps within operating limits. Most servers start with a warm engine, but is possible to over cool as well as overheat your engine, which can cause damage. Edited October 1, 2018 by =FEW=Herne 1
69TD_Hajo_Garlic Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Any aircraft in particular? Assuming kuban, the he111 is very easy to overload with fuel, a common beginners mistake. Another thing that got me when the a20 came out was to shut the inlet radiators before takeoff otherwise it shakes like crazy 1
CountZero Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 its realy not to complicated, you just have to look at thouse icons on right side of screan, and dont go in red power for long, BoS airplanes on vvs side are mutch more easyer to engine manage then kuban ones, also on axis in 109g2 you could fly on ful power 30+min with no problem but 109g4 has emergancy so thats only for short time and brakes your engine. If you can get BoS also its great for starting in this game, and airplanes in it are great even in late maps.
PerfectionMan Posted October 4, 2018 Author Posted October 4, 2018 Thanks for all the replys! We are working on mapping the engine controls: mixtures, cowlings, radiators, turbo/super charges, prop pitch etc..... We were operating without using any of these thinking we were still in Normal mode but as some have mentioned, the servers are most likely Expert. We will get those bindings done and be up with you boys in no time

I hope you and your friend have many happy multiplayer gaming hours! 1

Lensman Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 Ahhh ... Expert mode in VR is a problem because I can't see my keyboard and despite having a very large number of assignable buttons and switches on my stick and throttle I'm out of options for engine controls!

Voice activation software. I try to keep the engine controls mapped to joystick buttons and then use voice for things lie opening the map, changing the view, etc.

It's not too bad, you can double up with some bindings, air outlet + water radiator for example, as AC have one or the other. I still have to peek under the rift for some keys, but they are not things I need routinely, things like setting gunner range, or engine selection for multi engine AC etc. You get used to it quickly

No big deal but it's there. For the 109s it can be beneficial to switch to the manual pitch and manual radiators at times. Thought, it's not mandatory for BFs - they are very competitive on "auto", already. Edited October 9, 2018 by Ehret
[TWB]80hd Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 Of all the peripherals I own for flight sims, this was the cheapest and it gets used almost every flight.... https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Saitek-Flight-Throttle-Quadrant/dp/B01M00UHE3 Definitely recommended if you need a couple more axes...
