SeaQuark Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 So I'm thinking of giving this a spin after being frustrated by War Thunder-- which is a nifty game, except it seems more designed for mouse than joystick, which defeats my whole purpose of getting into flight sims. Joystick is horrible and wobbly for aiming in that game, and I've read on forums that BoS is actually much smoother with a joystick, despite all the other difficulties that come with increased realism. Does BoS provide an in-game tutorial walking you through all the necessary steps to start, take off, and fly the plane? Or are you just left to figure it out through research? One of the things that frustrated me about War Thunder's simulator mode is that after instructing you how to take off and land, they give very little instruction on useful flying-- trim, elevator, ailerons, etc. are all present in the game but there is nothing to walk you through understanding and operating them. How does BoS compare in this regard? And lacking an in-game tutorial, is there a player-made tutorial that will take me through basic plane controls through combat maneuvering?
DD_Crash Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 (edited) As BoS is still in the Alpha stage, it might be worth looking at Il-2 1946 which I heard is going for $3 at the good old games website. The are plenty of youtube tutorials for 1946 and would give you a flavor of things to come http://www.gog.com/game/il_2_sturmovik_1946 Edited February 3, 2014 by DD_Crash 1
SYN_Haashashin Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 (edited) Hi SeaQuark, As Crash said BoS still an alpha so no manuals or official tutorials yet. But you can learn something even before is release, try this youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwV5RLX7mkaDy5gTIiuwGmg Its SYN_Requiem BoS channel, thanks to his videos I actually can fight in RoF, they are a good start and will be explaining lots of things, from take off and landing to dogfight tactics (I hope so as he did it for RoF). FuriousMeow Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I would wait if I were you, because if War Thunder is frustrating then you will not enjoy this either. In fact, this isn't supposed to be enjoyable right now. It's early access to allow a core group of interested individuals to take part in the building process of something that in 6 to 8 months time will hopefully be a great product collaborated by the input and ideas of the individuals that are testing this early with the vision, technology and experience of the developers. View this not as something you expect to have fun with, but a way to lead to a smooth launch with as many issues ironed out by release so that many more will enjoy it and experience a fully developed product at that time. At this time, however, expect a lot of disappointments, bugs, crashes, issues, anything but fun because that is not what early access is. I think Dean Hall expressed it best with his comments for the DayZ early access alpha, which is identical to the process going on here. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-12-05-dean-hall-issues-warning-about-dayz-early-access 1

This makes sense. I'm excited about BoS because I'm very interested in the Eastern Front and Soviet aircraft, but I will stick with War Thunder for now and wait for the final (and cheaper!) version to be released. Thanks for the advice!
SYN_Haashashin Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Just a note: I wasnt saying you should buy the premium sorry for the misunderstanding, but if you are gonna fly BoS I highly advice Requiem videos.

I would say get BoS now regardless.. It will be more expensive down the road and if the East Front and Soviet AC are your thing anyway why wait unless you just don't have the $$ at the moment.. I would also suggest that you consider Rise of Flight.. which is free to try and IL2 1946. IL2 46 is dirt cheap and is still a fantastic piece of entertainment.. in fact as of this date it is still the best bang for the buck in a WWII flight sim..
Mewt Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 War Thunder has full and comprehensive Joy Stick support. The Simulator Mode works perfectly fine for thousands of players. If your stick isn't working in WT it's because your settings are wrong. Saying WT is 'designed for the mouse' is incorrect and confuses the matter. Don't get IL2 because you are having a frustrating time with WT. Get IL2 because its awesome. Why not try both? Fix WT so you can have an enjoyable time playing it - and try out IL2 Early Access so you can see what all the fuss is about I can help you set up your stick in WT or your settings in IL2 EA or both. Add me in game in WT or on these forums. "Mewt"
