I would very much doubt she was Japanese. But there are some that could have been the person in question:

 

1931 - Katherine Cheung becomes the first woman of Chinese ancestry to earn a pilot's license

 

1932 - Ruthy Tu becomes first woman pilot in the Chinese Army

 

He seeing her in the 1930 would explain for the „small aircraft“.

Does the sex of the pilot matter if your plane emits vast quantities of white fluid at peak performance?

 

Take the audio files used for radio commands, shift the pitch up in a program like audacity, and save. That is pretty much it.

I think this would be a great addition if your pilot and or gunner's gender was randomized upon spawning but I don't think the devs would or can even put the time, effort, and money into this addition.
