Hellcatz Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I have heard about this game for about a month now and I have had one question on my mind for a while. Is a joystick required in order to play this game? Also, can you fly in 3rd person or is it only 1st person? thanks, Hellcatz
Creepermoss Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Required no, recommended yes. As for third person, there is an external view so far, but it would be very difficult, IMO, to be combat effective when using it.
Pierre64 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Didn't Stalin himself said of the joystick that it was as essential to "IL-2 Sturmovik BoS" as bread and water? ...or something like that... 1
J4SCrisZeri Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Absolutely reccomended, playing with keyboard is a form of self-violence. 1
Fifi Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 For the price of a couple of beers you can get you a stick!
DD_bongodriver Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Didn't Stalin himself said of the joystick that it was as essential to "IL-2 Sturmovik BoS" as bread and water? ...or something like that... Cream in Borsch.
siipperi Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Yes, get yourself 20$ joystick and you'll be amazed how much more you can enjoy the game.
Trident_109 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 If you don't get a stick you'll be wondering why everyone else is having a good time while you're just frustrated, and why am I being shot down so easily. Keyboard really isn't an option IMO.
BeastyBaiter Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Technically you can fly with a keyboard, but you won't enjoy it. You can also fly in external view, but you won't have a gun sight and the camera is not fixed relative to the plane. Good for looking around and admiring the scenery, but useless while trying to shoot something. The game is designed to use a joystick and cockpit view.
LLv44_Mprhead Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 For some reason many people new to sims seem to think that it's easier to fly in 3rd person. In my experience it's not. Getting joystick is very advisable. Or (I think) you can also map pad to work as joystick, I think it works for some people. 1
IIN8II Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 If youre going to invest in a game like this, you may as well invest in a joystick. 1
hiro Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 joystick. believe me I tried for really, really long time to use a joystick in Il-2 original, and it didn't work. I was thinking, dude my $99 laser mouse (this was when it was new and a novelty) and my gamer updated version of IBM's model M keyboard, worked for portal and halflife 2, and ace combatd (PS port) should work here. I was so wrong, and naive . . . And this game's alot more detail (than IL-2 original), so the fail of the keyboard is equally more detailed also.
Bearcat Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Yes... if you want to actually fly the sim. Don't kid yourself .. even IL2 can be used with a mouse and keyboard.. but if you want to do anything but watch you will need a joystick.
Bladderburst Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 No. Don't buy a stick. Fly third person only. Fly against me please .
cobbman11 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 You can get a really great flight stick for almost nothing. The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro a fantastic entry level stick. I use it with the throttle unit from the Saitek X52.
Jaegermeister Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I've actually tried to fly on my PC at work with the keyboard..... Shhhhh! I got it off the ground, but even with the trim eternally up it was impossible to maintain anything resembling a straight path. Total fail. Although technically possible, it would not be very gratifying and you would not really be able to enjoy the sim for what it is being designed. To come as close to flying as possible without pumping avgas.
9./JG52Ziegler Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 yes +1 and add a throttle quadrant and rudder pedals to the list.
Skoshi_Tiger Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 +1 and add a throttle quadrant and rudder pedals to the list. And once your finally hooked, set aside some money for a TrackIR.
II./JG27_Rich Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 What's the point of buying this fantastic sim if you're not going to use a joystick
White1 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I guess playing this sim without a stick would be like dating J'lo with a chastitybelt... And then throw in a set of pedals, a good monitor, TrackIR and a comfy chair. Then she will rock you!
Georgio Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 And don't forget to put aside a bit of dosh to upgrade your GPU on a regular basis... :D
J5_Rumey Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 My guess is that this game might draw some of the crowd from World of warplanes and other titles like it, where flying in 3rd person arcade mode useing a pad is actiually superior to first and a joystick. Hope some make the move, get themselfs a joystick, because flyinga combat sim against others is the best player versus player you can have in my opinion.
VeryOldMan Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 For the price of a couple of beers you can get you a stick! let me se.. here i would need 815 beers to get a X52 Drinking those beers woeuld have the exact same effect.
DD_bongodriver Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 something to hold but no feedback? 1
Emgy Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 and a little bit floppy, with a built-in deadzone.
P51Mustangrulz Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I have heard about this game for about a month now and I have had one question on my mind for a while. Is a joystick required in order to play this game? Also, can you fly in 3rd person or is it only 1st person? thanks, Hellcatz Twist sticks are great! I used one back in the early days of IL2 and Rise of Flight, but I would argue that a joystick is definitely required and that RUDDER PEDALS are just as necessary. I've used a Saitek Av8r (which is a twist stick) for years, and compared to a lot of sticks it is dirt cheap...but it works. Once I got the rudder pedals, I disabled the twist function on the stick and haven't looked back.
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 For the price of a couple of beers you can get you a stick! Either that or OP can just stick with War Thunder.
Streiff Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 A joystick is really the only way to go. Get a Cyborg Evo, cheap and does what its suppose to do. Had mine for 5-6 years now. There is a 3:rd person view (called "combat camera") but no gun sight or anything. There will be servers that have cockpit off option witch in all honesty is way better than this 3:rd person view. Some people say its disorientating without a visible cockpit for reference when flying but that's just because they drinking to much when flying. Don't believe me, count how many posts it took before beer came into the discussion. + =
dburne Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I don't think this game has a no-cockpit (Wonder Woman) view does it? I've cycled through all the available camera views and I couldn't find a no-cockpit view. it is my understanding it does not and will not, at least that is what I recall reading...
1CGS LukeFF Posted February 16, 2014 1CGS Posted February 16, 2014 There will be servers that have cockpit off option Have a look at the difficulty settings again.
Georgio Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Please feel free to fly with a keyboard, preferably in multi-player and on any server I frequent; I need the target practice...^^
Rama Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 it is my understanding it does not and will not, at least that is what I recall reading... Yes, it was said, and you understood it well.
