Gimp 2.10 Upgrade Problems

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have started to get back into skinning and wanting to do some work on normal maps. I use Gimp and had the older 2.2 or 6 or 8 or whatever previous version running great. I downloaded the latest version and it runs seriously slow. Before upgrading I had no problems with modifying templates now it seems like every little thing I do causes the program to stop responding for a few moments while it thinks everything through. Any ideas what is up? Is there something wrong with my install or is that just how Gimp 2.10 is?

The 2.10 is slower in general. Not sure what they changed but it's very noticeable.

I'm going to stick to it but if you spend a lot of time on GIMP I'd say roll back to 2.8.

Unfortunately, after saving my work in 2.10.6, 2.8 no longer will open the .xcf files. So it appears I am stuck with 2.10.6. I managed to get it faster by setting the priority. I am still having major trouble with copy or cut and pasting something and then not being able to move the floating pasted selection. That part is what is really driving me crazy. I have no idea what is going on with it. Normally, you can select something. Then cut or copy. Paste and it will be floating. You hover the cursor over it and you will get a movement cursor so you can drag the floating item around. Now it doesn't happen. Not with the selection tool or the movement tool. Basically all of my skinning and template, alpha template, and normal map making are on hold until I get this figured out.

I think part of the problem is that now every layer in my template is listed as being 6.5gb each.
