In order to use these 4k skins, do I need to have the template that goes with it? Is it in the game already?

I read one post that a guy made his own template that was different and can only use hie skins with his template.

Is there a guideline on using these 4k skins?

Thanks

templates are for making skins in photoshop/gimp etc, they are not included with the game already

in order to use a 4k skin that someone has made just download them, chuck the .dds files into the relevant folders in data\graphics\skins, then enable the 4k setting in the games graphics options and you should be good to go

Most template in 4K are produced by ICDP and their normal maps will generally also fit any official skins in 2K as well as the user made ones in 4K that use his template.

There are other templates produced by Rafiger (109 G4 G6 and G14), BlackHell Hound (ingame IL2 1943 plus 109Fs), Boomerang 109F2, AE Hartman (P40), 5Tuka (JU87 and Ju52) and Zargos (P39, LA5FN) that differ from the official templates not only in size but also detail. These templates will work best with skins produced using them so older skins or 2K skins made with the official 2K templates may not look quite right. This may be most apparent when the normal mapping for access panels and rivets  may not line up to the painted effect.

There is not a lot of overlap in the differing 4K templates though so if you are wanting a full 4K set you should be able to quickly see whos template has been used for your favourites. Usually one template reigns supreme so for the few cases where there are 2 differing 4K templates (P40 and possibly one of two others) there is a good change your favourite skins will be produced using this. Most skinners will says whos template has been used but some don't. As for finding the skins....ha!...its a clusterf but a good starter are the repositories run by BHH, Zargos, Detcord, RaFiGer and sjellar followed by the threads started when the template was announced as released.

As I said the skins work best with their appropriate 4K normal maps - most templates will also have a link to these maps for you to download. These go in your Game's root directory in the path data/graphics/Planes/PLANE MODEL/Textures.

Good Luck!
