J's fine. I can just as easily suck in the J as I can in the L. Originally the L, yes, but it was changed to the J, because the L model didn't see action in northwest Europe.

The flaps do produce a pitch-up moment that overpowers the Mach-induced tuck-in. The flaps won't magically make you walk across water, though. At altitude, the flaps will buy you a couple of mph of delayed tuck-onset and the tuck-in will overpower the flaps eventually. If you're diving steep enough low enough and fast enough, you'll buy the farm - no matter if the flaps are in, out or in some box waiting to be installed. It's seldomly the flow across the elevator that troubles you - it's the center of pressure going progressively aft when hitting and going beyond Mcrit (usually from about 25% MAC to about 50% MAC) and ducking up your sum of moments over the CoG. It basicly means you'll have too little leverage for that poor little elevator to pull the nose up with. The dive recovery flaps will push the CoP forward (that only works so much) and thus will help resore (or reatain) elevator-effectivity to some degree. It's not a magical "get out of jail free"-card, though. 2 hours ago, Legioneod said: From what I've seen in pilot accounts they usually deploy them at the beginning of the dive. That's the way they were supposed to be used. Also, you don't want them to deploy asymmetrically in a dive. That would be a very bad day.

I’m not the greatest at catching irony on the Internet, but for some reason I always seem to get it, when Danziger is joking, even when noone else does. I'm afraid we are all Datas sometimes when on the Internet.

The P-47 flaps also deployed asymmetrically and they could never fix the problem throughout it's production iirc. Edited September 12, 2018 by Legioneod
