If you get your speed up a bit in a Bf 109 and pull up to vertical, you can sort of become a helicopter for a little while...

rumour has it dev's would like to have a go at Korea, if this is the case, it would almost certainly be at least a few years out, but choppers were used I believe for casevac. Whether they would include them or not is another thing.

Get I-16

Put it in to flatspin.

Turn of Motor

Push stick to side of spin.

Zack feditsch

In Soviet Russia Rotor spinns you.

As far as I am aware there were a handful of auto gyros in service in ww2. I don't think they technically can be called helicopters but that is splitting hairs.

We won't see helicopters in this sim anytime soon.

Best bets to dream of would be FA-223 Dragon (used operationally and 1st helicopter to cross the English Channel):

Or Flettner 282

Actual helicopters (as opposed to autogyros)  were just beginning to be evaluated for milatary use at the end of WW2. The Germans had the Focke-Achgelis Fa 223, which entered serial production in 1942, but only saw limited use: the Germans clearly didn't see it as a priority. The American Sikorsky R-4 also saw very limited service in the  China-Burma-India theatre, starting in 1944.

Edit: Forgot about the Flettner Fl 282, which also saw limited service with the Luftwaffe.

Contra-rotating intermeshed rotors.

An interesting contraption, but it is an autogyro kite, rather than a helicopter. Towed behind a U-boat.

Ok guys thanks for explaining this to me! I didn't realize there were no helicopters in WW2!

The reason I asked is that I love il2 in VR and I love helicopters in DCS.....

It would be an awesome combination.

Thanks!

There were as you can see on our links, pictures and videos. Just not really used a lot. Few build, just started developing them.

I'd love to see them in game.

i don't expect to see them though :)

Might see an H-13 or H-19 if we go to Korea eventually.

In the meantime, stick to DCS for helos, it does them serious justice.

Except the Gazelle. It is an abomination. Huey is top notch. I don't own the others yet.

An undeservedly overlooked machine that could have been the first practical military utility helicopter

Gazelle is one of the best in my humble opinion!
