GTOAviator Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Fellow Rift users, Is there any way to remove/reduce the "grainy" look especially noticeable during night flights? I just tried to do some night pattern work for fun but with Rift it feels like I'm looking through a screen door - much more noticeable than flying during the day. It was so bad I actually started to get motion sickness (which hasn't happened to me using VR yet). I did a search of the forum and couldn't find anything related to this specific issue, so please feel free to link a fix thread if there is one.
Guest deleted@134347 Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 there are no true black colors in hmd and paired with low resolution and a pronounced SDE you get what you see. However you can get a much better result when flying night Winter missions (snow) with an early Moon. Drop in a 5x5 dog fight and the fireball circus will look pretty magical.
chiliwili69 Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 It is true that night flights with the Rift, the SDE is more prominent. But after the first 10-15 minutes my eyes get somehow accommodated to that annoying effect and then I forget it completely. Full Moon, snow and searchlights help to attenuate the effect. In the other hand, looking the fire effects are spectacular.
dburne Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Have not checked night flights in IL-2, I don't really notice it much though in Elite Dangerous.
HunDread Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 You could check lefuneste's 3d Migoto mod. I can do great blacks with it for night. It requires quite some fiddling to get what you like though.
GTOAviator Posted September 6, 2018 Author Posted September 6, 2018 Thanks all! It's nice to know I'm not the only one having issues with true blacks in Rift. I'll also admit that doing full pattern work at midnight with no runway lights had me starring harder than normal into the night sky - speaking of which, is there no way to turn on runway lights in free flight? ?
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 Black_Sab, what do you do with lefuneste's mod to get better blacks at night? Very interesting imo

Very interesting imo I'm not at my PC now but as I remember these are the values I usually use under the color fix. z6 = -0.1 w6 = 1.2 This gives nice contrast at daylight conditions and great blacks at night. Note that there may be some drawbacks: 1. In daylight you need a bit of getting used to how the cockpit looks 2. I don't use shadows to save FPS. Since the blacks are blacks, there is a chance that the cockpit shadows obstruct the instruments badly. I don't know, never tested. 3. It might be a bit darker at night than optimal but looks very cool 4. In bright, sunny winter conditions the whites are so white that targets for dive bombings or runways for landings might blend into the snow. In these conditions I usually switch to the default values with a hotkey
Henree Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 1- Disable OVRService from Task manager (Services tab) 2- Open Regedit.exe and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software 3- Right click on the Software folder > New > Key and name the new folder "Oculus" 4- Right click on the Oculus folder > New > DWORD 32bit Value and name it UseSpud 5- Set the value to 0 6- Start OVRService again and put on your headset 7- (Probably) be amazed at how everything looks clean and black
Madhamel Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 (edited) What Henree stated. Well known problem in DCS VR Oculus circles. Link to discussions below. https://forums.oculusvr.com/community/discussion/59948/new-curious-findings-about-spud-technical https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/8d7iki/huge_graphic_quality_fix_for_some_oculus_rift/ Henree's post I tried it but it switches off "Spud" and can produce other colour problems. I tried the suggestion of deleting (or cut and save somewhere else if you wish) the two files in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Oculus\Spud. Files are .spud and .mashed. Leave the Spud directory empty. This deletes the grey effect but keeps Spud running I believe. Worked great. In DCS and IL2 blacks are black again. No grainy sandy grey look. Black colours in game are nice and dark again like when I first got the Oculus. Some say the files return and problems return hence the .bat file idea. But for me the files have not re-downloaded and night flights are great. But do your own research. Just google "spud" or "mura" "oled mura" effect. Edited September 24, 2018 by Madhamel
