Dutchvdm Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 Hi Guys, I was triggered in another topic about improving fuel management and the addition of external fuel tanks for BOBP. For the American Aircraft external fuel tanks are a no-brainer, and i would guess the newer German aircraft will get them as well. But it makes me think if they will add them to to older aircraft as well. Most of the German aircraft from BOS/BOM and BOK could carry them. And at last i have absolutely no idea about Soviet aircraft using external fuel tanks. I have never seen a Yak-1 or La-5 with drop tanks. Grt M 2
FlyingH Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 The I-16 had a pair of 100l externals at times.
Yakdriver Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 spit, P-40, P-39, LaGG, Rata, Emil Friedrich Gustav, Anton... all of these have historically had the droptank option. That includes American Aircraft. Please lay out - why you think they will come, - why you trhink they SHOULD come - and why you think they should be added to the previously released Planes.
CountZero Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 in this game i see no reason to have external fuel tanks, even with short range airplanes we have now its no problem to fly 1h sorties, and thats more then enought on small maps we have or will have in future, only if some PTO comes fuel tanks could be usefule to add, add them now and i expect players would just use them to take airplanes with 20-30% fuel and DTs like it was normal in 1946. 2
Legioneod Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 I'd like to have them just to have them, and to be able to create long range missions across the whole map. More importantly though, I want to see an updated fuel system with the ability to view fuel, switch tanks, etc, all manually instead of it being automatic. 3

Thanks for the input. For BOBP it was stated that they would add droptanks. I'm not stating that the older planes are getting them as well, but it would be nice to know that we are getting them or not. Although i don't think that we are in desperate need for droptanks right now, i agree with Legioneod that it would be great to have them for historical sake. Grt M
-TBC-AeroAce Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 They would be like my fish knife. A great tool that never comes out of the draw. 1 1
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 yeah is there even a map ingame where like P47 would need a drop tank.. Whats the biggest map 250km x 250km ?
-TBC-AeroAce Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 (edited) I we can make an improvised napalm bomb with a full drop tank I'm down other that that they will stay in the hangar. Being serious though I think the only plane I would actually take them with in game would be the 109 or La 5FN. Most of the others easily have the range/endurance on a full standard tank. I used them in DCS for the P-51 all the time. It's nice to be able to carry most of your fuel externally, that way if you get into combat you can drop tanks and be at a good fuel level for combat. 1CGS LukeFF Posted August 30, 2018 1CGS Posted August 30, 2018 The I-16 would benefit particularly from having drop tanks.
Legioneod Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Just now, LukeFF said: The I-16 would benefit particularly from having drop tanks. Agreed, especially in career, I don't think I've ever made it through a mission without running out of fuel, or coming very close.
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 If it is indeed that big then maybe thats ok.. and i agree for career players it would be very nice. also its not like you want to enter combat with full fuel tanks in the fuselage anyways.. if you use drop tanks to get there you will be in combat with more fuel. More fuel (often located at CG means heavier wing loading and we all know what that means)

More fuel (often located at CG means heavier wing loading and we all know what that means) It depends on how they implement it. In DCS you could adjust the internal fuel load but the drop tanks would remain full, this way you could use fuel in the drop tanks while keeping a low amount in the internals. In Il2 the drop tanks fuel load should be unchangeable, the only thing you should be able to change is internal fuel load. This way you could have different settings depending on what you want. 50% internals + a drop tank for example. Edited August 30, 2018 by Legioneod
LeLv76_Erkki Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 I'd have needed a drop tank many times both on in 109 and 190. In TAW escort sorties to strategic targets in enemy rear can be long... 1

In some aircraft, like in the case of the 109, it is always 100% since the drop tank feeds into the internal fuel tank.
Ribbon Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 If my opponents are going to use it in a dogfight than ok, otherwise i don't need them?
5./JG11_Rain Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 When can we expect to have droptanks? The sorties we can do now are very limited. We would like to keep the squadron longer in the air, also we need rearm option on the airfields.

During my JG -52 career in BOM I was often doing bomber escorts where I was returning to base with the fuel gauge near empty, and once or twice with the fuel warning light on, so I would not have minded a drop tank along on those. Also I suspect that with some of the western 109 squadrons in BOK they wouldn't hurt. 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 From what I understood from comments from before, yes they want to do them, and they want to do them right. That is not just doing drop tanks but implementing some sort of fuel tank management system so you can control the tanks and their use too. The original IL-2 had drop tanks but their management was extremely simplistic... it sounds like here they want to push things a bit further. I can see tanks becoming useful on longer duration missions that some of us are starting to fly in some cases. 2

I guess that would depend on reload speeds, but from what I know, ww2 aircaft reloads were no short tasks.
1./StG1_Elias64 Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Actually I used drop tanks a lot in MP in the past. I took 30% or less fuelload and droptanks,so hoping to have the little advantage of the lighter aircraft in a dogfight.

Another droptank tactic is to climb fast and maintain high cruise speed as theres no reason to save fuel. Then drop them over target or when entering combat. Depends a lot on exact mission, plane and distances. I would use them mostly when escorting bombers, for long flights 109's 300-litre drop tank would allow me to take off the same time with bombers, maintain high speed when cruising while still having fuel to get there and back. Without drop tank I need to cruise very slow to save a fuel to fly 1 hour 20 min or longer with reserve for 10-15 min of combat.
Dutchvdm Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 Was the 262 able to carry droptanks? Grt M

I expect they will add droptanks at some time but still for what we do in game now you can fly long missions, but you need to do fuel menagment, not fly all time on high 70%+ when its no need. For lagg that i offten play with it says 2.2h and i played missions that lasted 100+min with 100 fuel with it but i offten dont take more then 80% for plan to do 60min missions, and im sure i could stay longer if i wonted to save even more fuel when just caping or cruisng. Not having DTs now has one benefit of making players to learn to save fuel atleast untill DTs come example of 80min sortie in new 109k4 and 5kills, so he was fighting and still manage to save fuel to be in air quite long time for online play. http://www.knightsoftheair.eu/en/sortie/44510/?tour=4 Edited November 23, 2018 by 77.CountZero 2
=[TIA]=I-Fly-Central Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 ⬆️⬆️⬆️Just cause I can! That being said; my fuel status was MASTER CAUTION when I landed. (See video for proof!) Ace Flight 109 K-4 || KOTA || IL-2 GB Still would like some DT's. I'd stay up even longer. 1

wolfbojan189 Posted November 24, 2018 Posted November 24, 2018 like to have DT, Multiplayer KOTA and for realizam
