Ptolemy_Soter Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 (edited) Hi everyone, I start a series of topics about plane's 3D model in our favorite sim. I'm encouraged by the recent Spitfire IX correction, which means that devs can work on an already existing 3D model. My goal is to show that there is another way than adding brand new planes to expand game's planeset. What is already existing can be improved and corrected if necessary. Now let's turn on the first member of the Ilyushin Il-2 dynasty, the model 1941. Many details are already modeled. They appear when you select the VYa-23 canons. By doing this, you have the plane as it was in 1942 (but without its wooden fuselage): Fully armored cockpit Armored plate behind the pilot A new wing with unballanced, fabric-covered aillerons and landing light on the left side. In reality, all these modifications were incorporated progressively on the production lines. So, to improve realism, they should be selectable separately in the hangar. And what is lacking to have a completely finished aircraft ? Three things, A wooden fuselage, that became standard after Barbarossa. The absence of the little armour plate that covers the upper part of the gape between the propeller hub and the fuselage on early planes. The possibility to have a flexible boot on the tailwheel. Like above, they should be added separately in the hangar. My source is Massimo Tessitori's fantastic website http://massimotessitori.altervista.org/sovietwarplanes/pages/il-2/il-2.htm Plenty of photographs are shown to illustarte his comments. I will relly on his work for the entire Il 2 familly which is not correctly done in this simulator. Edited August 23, 2018 by Ptolemy_Soter Orthograph 1
