Rlbomber Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 tried my first dogfight today in multiplayer and found it very difficult to tell the enemy from the friendlies. Is there a setting or something that I can't find that indicates between the two or do I just have to learn the enemy planes?
=X51=VC_ Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 It depends on the server, I think there are some that run with the labels turned on but on an "expert" settings server, you have to do it the hard way. It's all part of the fun! I'm sure there are threads somewhere with advice on how to optimise graphics settings for better aircraft recognition. But yes, in short, you need to learn. We don't have that many different planes though, and most of the Soviet ones share a very similar wing shape, so it's not that hard.
Rlbomber Posted August 19, 2018 Author Posted August 19, 2018 thanks for the responses, the main issues I'm having is that I'm using VR and it's difficult from a distance to tell what they are. I have to get pretty close to determine enemy or not.

[CPT]Crunch Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 You need this for VR if you want any hope at all in identification, works wonders! 1
Sketch Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 (edited) x2 for Migoto's VR mod. Best solution ever, for spotting and IDing enemies with VR! Edited August 19, 2018 by [TWB]Sketch

I have to get pretty close to determine enemy or not. I use VR as well, you need to spend some time experimenting with the settings that work for you. Also, even without the mod, map the zoom function to somewhere close as it's very useful. You can also get a lot of information without properly seeing the shape. Where are they? What direction are they flying in? How are they behaving, flying patterns, reaction to you? If you're joining a fight to help, what are the tracer colours? Hardest is when you're directly in front or behind them, but I don't mind getting very close for final ID because most of the time that's better for shooting anyway. If you can sneak up on them, why not? If they break away, they'll quickly give you an aspect that will help you ID them.
Algy-Lacey Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 Hello Rlbomber, You may find this thread invaluable for choosing settings that help with spotting in VR: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/34266-copypaste-settings-for-best-spotting-rift-and-now-odyssey/ Algy
StickMan Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 At first identifying can seem daunting but after hundreds of hours you will forget you ever had trouble at all. It will then become automatic, you won't even think about it. Other factors besides silhouettes will come into play such as the height and heading the bogie is flying and tracer color. Russians tend to have a reddish color to their tracers, Germans are a more golden yellow. It's like everything else with combat flight sims, it comes down to practice. You will either not have the desire and quit or you will be like the rest of us and it will become an addiction. The hours will melt away, and you will get better. But no matter how good you get you can always be better, if that makes sense.
1./KG4_OldJames Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Tracer colour is usually the first giveaway, and in my case, usually when an aircraft shoots your wing off it can be assumed that it is an enemy. (Not a 100% foolproof method) 2
