It actually made it a little worse. Recorded on FRAPS, all quick mission conditions the same. As a side note, the game actually looks really smooth to me at 40 fps. That thing they say is true, “Just don't watch FPS and you'll enjoy the game.”

No Overclock: 49.2 FPS

With Overclock: 47.5 FPS

(Some other games show improvement, one shows degradation while OCing)

System: i5-6600k 3.5 Ghz. G.Skill 16 GB DDR4 3200 Mhz (8x2), EVGA 1070 SC.

Overclocked CPU to 4.5 Ghz.

“Overclocked” Ram to 3200 Mhz from 2133. (I had forgotten to switch the XMP profile thing when I built the system in 2016.)

Game settings: 3840X2160, Ultra on everything else

Knowledge level: Low & Decreasing

What is going on?

Thanks in advance.

1) Don't use FRAPs for FPS measurement - press BACKSPACE in game to get actual FPS readout without the overlay potentially screwing up your FPS in the game (also FRAPS is terrible, there are many more modern apps out there, like OBS, that can do the same)

2) Do you use Vsync?

3) Are you running anything background, like streams / videos?

4) Is your card overheating? It will auto-throttle, and in some cases may throttle more while overclocked. Did you increase Vcore during OC? That may cause more heat even at lower clocks.

Hey, thanks.   Ok Fraps out, I’ll test with others and write that.

Negative vsync.

Background, only firewall.  (Zone alarm)

According to an app called “hardware monitor” my graphics card  is hanging around 48C.  My CPU is around 33 C.

I don’t know what Vcore is so I’ll look that up when I get to my system.  (Writing with thumbs now.)

i dont know much but this stuff is kind of fun.  EVGA bios makes it easy too.   I better be careful...

thanks so far.

At this high resolution, you are limited by the performance of your GPU. If you only overclock the CPU and RAM, you won't see any significant improvement.

Unless you repeated an identical test many times, these results are the same. The 1.7 FPS difference is small compared to the measurement uncertainty.

You can confirm the GPU bottleneck by checking the "Performance" tab of Task Manager. You'll likely see the GPU 3D hitting 100% most of the time. If you decreased your resolution, the overclock would make a measurable difference.

The only real solution is to get a faster graphics card. 4K isn't trivial, even with a 1080 Ti. As new Nvidia products seem to be very near, it's actually not a bad time to be in this situation.

What is your RAM meant to run at? Do not overclock the ram unless it is made to run at 3200mhz, EDIT: Sorry didn't see your ram is meant to run at 3200mhz, so that is fine. You may not be supplying the CPU with enough voltage I know unstable overclocks can cause issues like you are having. I can guarantee you that your cpu is running far hotter than 33c under load, if you'd like I can try walking you through some basic overclocking tips. I would reset everything in the bios for now if you are not too sure what you are doing you can end up damaging components.

You can use coretemp to monitor your cpu temp while gaming or doing other stressful tasks, you need to find the temperature of your cpu under load. But like I said for right now I would reset everything to default, and then I can walk you through some easy steps to get you where you would like to be.

Yeah, this should be the key point.

Ceowulf, If you want to measure the influence of CPU overcloking in IL-2 performance you should take into account this:

1) Use a resolution which will not load at 100% you GPU, for example just 1920x1080

2) Increase the OC of the CPU only (in 0.2 GHz steps for exmaple), leave RAM just a fixed freq (2600, or 3000 or 3200)

3) Create your own track for the test (or use the one we created for IL-2). In quick missions, even if you set everything at the same, the other planes you put in start in different location and path everytime you launch the quickmission.

4) Don´t trust in your eyes. Use just Fraps. Fraps is old, yes, but it does the work. It can generate csv files with the fps of every second.

In the IL-2 VR community we have created a track that can be used in VR and also in monitor. The instructions for monitor are at the bottom of first post:

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/29322-measuring-rig-performance-common-baseline-for-il-2-v3/

We have measured how OC increase fps:

Awesome guys, can’t wait to get where I can test this stuff.

In in the meantime:

I fixed a major blunder which is somehow I had been running a generic gpu driver.  Dumb but there it is.  Now getting 55-73 FPS in QMB at 4K ultra.  (Rare dip to 44). Way cool.

Also, I did get as far as seeing in task manager that it’s totally a gpu bottleneck in IL2.  100% load at almost every second. (Didn’t know till this thread to look.)

Tangentially interesting is the fact that XPlane 11 demo cpu bottlenecks whether OC or not.  With that, hardware monitor is showing my 4.5ghz OC’ed cpu temps max at 56C.  My Corsair h100 brings it back to 33C in 1 second when it idles though.  That’s all safe, right?

I’m thinking VR one day soon and also this stuff is just interesting so even with good frame rates I’m going to carry on with what  you guys are advising.

Edit: moved VR question to new thread over there.

Thanks,
