In one of the best animes ever, Neon Genesis Evangelion, half the female characters are named after IJN WW2 warships. 

 

When I first watched it back in the late 90s, I had a semi-big crush on Misato Katsuragi (despite her being an alcoholic, sloppy paedophiliac)

And Asuka’s surname is Langley-Soryu, USS Langley being the name of three different USN WWII warships. Plus, her mother’s surname is Zeppelin-Soryu

 

As if it wasn’t already apparent, Hideaki Anno is a massive military geek. He wrote and directed Shin Godzilla, where every different piece of military hardware gets a subtitle naming it and it’s manufacturer.

Speaking of geekiness though, one of the things that makes Evangelion my favourite anime is how the message is that you can’t live in a fantasy world (which, given the context of the show, could be taken as a metaphor for watching anime all day) just because you’re scared of rejection. It’s a message that I think has become even more relevant, given how extreme people can be about that sort of thing. At least, that’s how I interpreted it.

Yeah that show is pretty much all about the hedgehog’s dilemma, with a heavy dose of mother-issues sprinkled on top.

 

All the jumbled-up judeo-christian synbolism and iconography is just eye candy IMHO. The show is far more grounded and a lot more human than it lets on.
