LeeHarvey Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 Hi guys, this is just a small suggestion, something to add a bit more realism to the airplanes. I noticed that the oil that spreads across the windscreen when you take a hit in the engine, only covers the glass. I'd think there would be oil streaking back over the cowling from the engine. In the cockpit, you can't really tell for obvious reasons, but in an external camera mode it's one of those things that once you see it, you can't not see it. Know what I mean? Anyway, I don't know if this can even be addressed (limitations of the engine, etc.), I just thought I'd bring it up and hope it would be a useful suggestion. 5
Legioneod Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 Agreed, it should definitely be modeled, I made a post about it and a more fluid oil effect a while back.
Ehret Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 And washing of oiled surfaces (at least the canopy) by flying into rain clouds should be added, too.

Water doesn't really wash oil very well irl, one of the best ways to clean oil is to actually use fuel, like diesel or gasoline. Fuel will "eat" the oil and will cause it to flow, after using fuel on the oil water would definitely clean it up easily. Aircraft in WW2 would sometimes be equipped with a fuel line going to the cockpit windshield, this would allow the pilot to spray fuel onto the windshield to help remove the oil, not all aircraft were equipped with this as far as I'm aware.

I have found some remarks about F4u's pilots washing oil obscured windshields under rain clouds. It should help a little, right? Edited August 11, 2018 by Ehret

Nil Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 (edited) Want oil in your cowling? Not enough oil? Here you go! Good but Totally Rip Off! Edited August 11, 2018 by TG1_Nil
LeeHarvey Posted August 11, 2018 Author Posted August 11, 2018 I'm thinking this could be done along with the other battle damage your plane takes. For lack of a better word, I'll call it a decal system. Like the decals of the holes in your plane applied to areas where enemy fire has struck, could there not be made "Oil" decals that get applied to the front portion of the plane according to where it is hit?

I was thinking the same thing. It shouldn't appear all at once but should build up oil texture as you lose oil. I mentioned something similar in the link in my first post. angus26 Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 I usually just get a bunch of engine oil and smear it on my screen.
