I currently have 8 GB of RAM installed on my PC.  Will upgrading to 16 GB improve performance?

Specs: i5 7500 3.4 GHZ, Win 10 64, Radeon RX580 8 GB. 1 TB HDD and 1080p freesync monitor.

I assume you mean 16 GB. It won’t improve performance in Il-2, unless you are using other programs at the same time and running out of memory.

A CPU or graphics card upgrade would probably help more. However, I’d need to know more about your resolution, expectations, etc. to be sure.

Yeah what are you trying to run? Resolution wise or multi monitor or VR?

As with your specs listed you should easily be getting 60fps @ 1080P on Ultra Max settings.

Thanks for replying.  Yes I mean 16 GB, I've corrected my mistake and added my 1080p resolution.  I don't have a problem running out of memory, however, I do have a problem with frame rate drops below 60 fps, which I have it locked at.

My graphics settings are High

Screen resolution: 1920x1080, UI scale: 100 %, Shadows quality: High, Mirrors: Complex, Distant landscape detail: x4, Horizon draw distance: 150 km, Landscape filter: Blurred, Grass quality: Distant, Clouds quality: High, Target FPS: 60, Dynamic resolution factor: Full,  Antialiasing: x4, Gamma correction; 0.9.   SSAO, HDR and Use 4k textures are all ticked.  I am also using Trackhat's software with their clip and web cam conversion.  Would installing an SSD help improve performance?

The RX 580 is a fairly powerful card that shouldn't have major problems with high settings at 1080p.

This CPU is certainly on the slow side, even at its maximum turbo frequency of 3.8 GHz (which it may not even be reaching, depending on several factors).

I recommend that you check the graphics usage while playing Il-2 (in the 'Performance' tab of Task Manager). If the GPU 3D graph is near 100% while flying, it means that the graphics card is reaching its limit. If it's not near 100%, the CPU is probably holding it back.

If you do find that the CPU is the problem, you have several upgrade options. A significantly faster CPU (i5-7600K or i7-7700K) could be used with the same motherboard. However, it might make more sense to switch to a different platform altogether, especially if you're starting with a low-end OEM motherboard.

Is the Gigabyte B250M-DS3H motherboard suitable for upgrading to a i5-7600k or i7-7700k CPU?

Yes, those CPUs would work without any problems.

At $270-$410, the upgrade is quite expensive. There is no further upgrade path with that motherboard, and its chipset won't allow overclocking for additional performance.

Therefore, some people might prefer to save that money for an entirely new PC that offers larger performance increases and/or further upgrade options. If you really need better CPU performance for Il-2, it's certainly a viable option, however.
