They are for messaging. If the plane goes down they send the pidgins out with messages to help rescuers find them. The birds are specially conditioned to fly back to a certain place, typically the home base of the bomber.

No, that is actually the speaker element. They used specially trained birds to sing the latest hit. The box is for resonance.

You should have seen the one with dedicated bass pidgeons.

The pigeons were also to inform HQ about mission progress...

I'm familiar with the pigeons.  However I'm genuinely surprised to see the aircrew dumping their parachutes willy nilly on the ground.

In full earnest, what were those pigeons used for? I only read about their deployment in see rescue operations, as they could spot small boots and rafts more easily than any human.

Ah, the bass pigeon, the mythical beast of audio world. Must have for any serious audiophile, i heard there was even murders over possession of viable breeding pair.

They were used for long range communication when outside of radio range or if the equipment failed. The birds could be trained or conditioned to fly back to one place fairly reliably and are capable of covering ground fairly quickly. So if a bomber crew had a message that needed to get back home but were out of range they could send a bird and the message would get back home before the bomber would. I guess if they got lonely they could also have a little pet for them in the plane. But I don't know if pidgins make good pets.

Maybe with the second phase of DLC. Can't wait to see the customization options; I want mine to be a bald eagle!
