Voidhunger Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 (edited) Im little confused by the topic and the question, but I have to admit that my English is bad. Pigeons trapped in portable speakers? Edited August 7, 2018 by Voidhunger 2
NiiranenVR Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 Yes - its really news for me that they have pigeons with them in the bombers
-SF-Disarray Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 They are for messaging. If the plane goes down they send the pidgins out with messages to help rescuers find them. The birds are specially conditioned to fly back to a certain place, typically the home base of the bomber. 1

Pigeons trapped in portable speakers? No, that is actually the speaker element. They used specially trained birds to sing the latest hit. The box is for resonance. You should have seen the one with dedicated bass pidgeons. 4 1

Feathered_IV Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 I'm familiar with the pigeons. However I'm genuinely surprised to see the aircrew dumping their parachutes willy nilly on the ground.
sniperton Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 (edited) In full earnest, what were those pigeons used for? I only read about their deployment in see rescue operations, as they could spot small boots and rafts more easily than any human. Edited August 8, 2018 by sniperton

Must have for any serious audiophile, i heard there was even murders over possession of viable breeding pair. 2

They were used for long range communication when outside of radio range or if the equipment failed. The birds could be trained or conditioned to fly back to one place fairly reliably and are capable of covering ground fairly quickly. So if a bomber crew had a message that needed to get back home but were out of range they could send a bird and the message would get back home before the bomber would. I guess if they got lonely they could also have a little pet for them in the plane. But I don't know if pidgins make good pets. 1
Bundook Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Here is the story of an RAF pigeon awarded the Dickin medal for saving a crew that had ditched in the sea: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-17138990 1
