ShamrockOneFive Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 I had an opportunity to go and visit the Great War Flying Museum located north west of Toronto, Canada today and I have to say that it is a hidden gem of a museum and aircraft collection. The museum has two sections, a hangar and an artifacts house which has plenty of World War I related materials, uniforms, artwork, models, postcards and propaganda, and so forth. The real meat and potatoes is their historical replicas which are about as close as you can get to a real World War I aircraft experience. The highlight is a Fokker D.VII which is close to being flown again after a crash in 2007. They also have a Sopwith 1/2 Strutter, a Fokker Dr. I, a S.E.5.a and a Nieuport 28. They are preparing to repair some damage to the S.E.5.a and then start/resume work on a Sopwith Camel which should be very exciting to see finished. If you're in the Toronto area either living or visiting ... I highly recommend! Website link: https://greatwarflyingmuseum.org/ 3
Cybermat47 Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 (edited) Looks awesome, I’ll have to check it out If you ever visit Australia, you should definitely visit the Australian War Memorial. They have an Albatros D.Va, S.E.5a, and Pfalz D.XII, all of which actually saw service during WWI and the inter war period. They also have the Red Baron’s boots, joystick, compass, and a short film directed by Peter Jackson: Not to mention the Lancaster, Bf-109, Me-262, and Me-163 a few metres away Edited August 3, 2018 by PB_Cybermat47 2 1
Stumble Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 (edited) While your over in Aussie you can always jump over the ditch to New Zealand and have a look at Sir Peter Jackson's Ari craft collection. I haven't actually been to look myself but it looks like he's got it all right. One problem is that I think its all too touristy now. The tourists take it away from us locals haha. Just like Hobbiton... This is back in 2011: Check this out too: https://www.airspacemag.com/videos/category/history-of-flight/heres-how-you-can-flying-one-of-peter-jacks/ Salute! Stumble. ShamrockOneFive Posted August 3, 2018 Author Posted August 3, 2018 It's amazing how much World War I history has been recreated or preserved. I love that attention to detail.
Stumble Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 I think I read that Sir Peter Jackson has a collection of 70 WW1 aircraft. Now I really want to visit them. Although it's a long drive though. S!
