Hi all I currently own BOS and BOM ( which was selflessly gifted to my by the brilliant HAZA) and some collector planes.

Ive contemplated buying BOK for a bit now,I nearly grabbed it a few weeks ago until my 15yr old gave me a vets bill. ( I swear I'm gonna shoot that bloody horse of hers) :hunter:

Haha anyway with a voucher in my profile,I hopefully should be able to purchase soon. I'm loving the series put bout 40 hrs in in SP and a couple in MP.

So my question is this...

Ive not really explored too much of both maps yet, should I just stick with what I've got for the moment and spend more time in Stalingrad and Moscow or..Is BOK superior in every way ie Plane set,Map,missions etc Is it a essential buy?

Any advice regarding BOK would be very appreciated..and thank you in advance for any replies

Thanks

Kuban is topographically the most interesting map, and it does have some very fun planes to fly. The p-39 and a-20!

I've only flown the Kuban map a few times on multiplayer, but it is gorgeous, with a lot of variety...much more than Moscow or Stalingrad.

The planeset is very interesting. You've got Lend-lease planes in there, some updated attackers. Its a great mid-war scenario.

Essential, no. But it does make things more interesting. I think BoK has the most diversified and balanced planeset, plenty of new stuff to learn flying them. There are quite a few configurations of foe engagements P39 v G4, La5FN vs G6, Yak 7 vs FW190A5 etc. The Boston is a very tough plane, imo even tougher than the Pe2 so nice stuff for vvs bomber guys. The map is beatiful too.

The Kuban map is real beauty. 3D mountains with snow on their peaks, green valleys, see, sunshine, ships. The P-39, the A-20 (my favourite), and the two collector planes (Spit and Hs-129) are unique types.

Best map hands down. When it gets the same treatment as Stalingrad did as far as getting rid of the sea of tiled farm textures in the flatlands, it will be better still.

Best map (dogfighting over the mountains is incredible), best career (in terms of plane variety for sure), most fun bomber in the game in the A-20B, excellent fighters for both sides. The only "miss" imo is the He-111H-16 which doesn't feel like a real tangible upgrade over the H-6. Sure on paper it's better but you're still going to get obliterated by any VVS fighters. Everything else is fantastic. The Fw-190A5/F3 is a brilliant strike aircraft, the Bf-110G-2 is really fun for busting tanks, the P-39 has some of the most demanding engine management but it rewards you with amazing top speed at low altitudes and a hard hitting armament, the Yak-7 is remarkably agile thanks to its redesigned wings and the double Berezins eat 109s alive... All the planes are good, really. Especially the collector planes. Oh, and you get a bonus scripted campaign with it, so it's technically better value for money than the other expansions

Here's the thing, when the entire release is a showstopper, how do you identify one standout? Imho the map is just wonderful. You can actually navigate by 'feel' after a while rather than frantically counting roads and rivers as I find I have to in Moscow and Stalingrad. This keeps my head up in the cockpit and means I do usually at least see whoever is just about to shoot me down.

I primarily fly reds. The a20 is a fighter pilots bomber. Ground handling is a dream and with a bit of route planning you can storm in and deliver a devastating amount of ordinance on target and Foxtrot Oscar home at wavetop height like a boss. The Mosquito is the only plane I can imagine delivering a greater thrill in that kind of mission profile.

The Yak7 is just a dream, a nice halfway house between the la5fn and the spit v.

The sea dragons campaign is super evocative and has hugely increased my confidence in taking an il2 in MP.

If you want to avoid vet bills in future, I would suggest eating the horse. Tender and delicious. Leaner than beef. Mmmmmmmm...

Best map so far, I guess you have flown in it.

A 20 is great, HS 129 is interesting and bring a charming challenge into it.

I think it is better than BOOB ever going to be

and yeah, sees dragon campaign is one of the best campaign I ever flown

Why would I sell you BOK? I only have one copy, and that's for me. You can't have it.

As above!

TBH Im still mainly playing the P40 but the addition of ships/boats and mountainous, for me, make it.

8(10) extra planes to fly too!

When you hop into the P-39 remember to increase the throttle slowly, or you'll overrev the engine and kill it quite quickly

Read my in-depth review :)

https://stormbirds.blog/2018/04/11/il-2-battle-of-kuban-in-depth-review/

I'll also add to the pile here. Battle of Kuban has the most beautiful map and probably the most diverse array of aircraft in the series yet. There's a good mix of everything included that helps it stand out from the other titles in the series. Each of them have their flavour... Moscow's late autumn, winter scenario with its earlier aircraft set really distinguishes it as well. Stalingrad is iconic in its own right while the aircraft set provides a lot of the bedrock for Kuban to borrow from. And of course you have the winter siege of Stalingrad which has its own unique aesthetic too. Then you get to the Kuban with the rolling hills, the mountains, the Black Sea, and so much green. Its quite refreshing :)

Kuban is worth every penny. It really brought the sim up a level by incorporating big water, big boats, and big mountains. I'm all about maps and eye candy and the Kuban map delivers.

Oh yeah, and the planes are great too.

It's a no brainer - buy and you'll love it.

1. By far the most beautiful map in the game for reasons already stated in this thread. It truly is a work of art.

2. Very cool plane-set. The P-39, Yak-7b, and A-20 are all wonderful warbirds to fly and are all very capable combat aircraft.

3. It comes with the Sea Dragons scripted campaign, which is an awesome campaign based around the Il2.

4. In addition to the cool planes, you also get all of the modifications that come with those planes. For example, you can load out the P-39 for an A-A or A-G strike role.

Based on sheer content and beauty, Il2 BOK is the best module in the game right now.

It's not necessarily over-revving the engine. The P-39 has a very long shaft connecting the propeller to the engine, so when you increase power too quickly you actually spiral fracture the shaft. I don't need to elaborate on why that is BAD.

I believe there was considerable concern among p-39 pilots fearing that shaft snapping and ...shafting them from behind.

Why I bought Kuban:

1. Because from certain angles the map kinda sorta looks like somewhere in PTO - it can pretend to be New Guinea for example;

2. Because with P-39, P-40 and A-20 it can pretend to be New Guinea even better :D.

Adger,

You're a Brit, so this should sum it up!

However, as I believe you already have the Spit, the world is your oyster with Kuban.

Cruises at 250kts all bombed up (700kg of fireworks), beats up an ammo-depot and dances with the Sturmoviks on the way back.

Thats BOS not BOK.  BOK has the A5 which is slower and heavier than the A3.

No, A-5 is faster because of variable cowl flaps.

Second he is talking about F-3, AKA A-5/U17 modification, which are the same thing.

Horse Flies are horrible. Well with the horse meat in beef stews and the footandmouth with the sheep and also the mad cows, the Brits really do have the finest range of cuisine.

I will stick with eating our coat of arms.
