Ceowulf Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Hi Guys, Can anyone help me get it? I'd especially like to hear from other virtual pilots who understand why flying is freeing and furballs are split second exciting. Why do you like tanks? Any books that really get you into it? I really do want to support these devs. I like what they do and I like that they listen to us. (I mean, mostly...) Thanks and good luck in your purple heart boxes. Ceowulf<><
Thad Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 It's fun experiencing blowing other tanks and buildings up while avoiding being blown up ones self. Watching a enemy vehicle explode and burst into beautiful flames is almost a erotic experience. ? 2
SCG_Slater Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Well tactics regarding tanks, nothing more satisfying than being behind cover blowing other tanks up. However the fun really starts when you are more than one and a part of a big operation.
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Just like flying, there is strategy and thought required to being a successful tank commander. Both are rewarding. Quick decision making requirements can occur in tanks too when the terrain provides it and often does.
Danziger Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Idk it just is. I'm not really into tanks much outside IL*2 so I don't know much about them. I never liked the idea of being locked inside a box that everyone on the field and in the sky will be aiming for. I wasn't interested in IL*2 getting tanks at first either. After trying it out though it is pretty awesome and pretty addictive. I like parking on a road and waiting for a supply truck convoy to show up. Driving to an airfield to try and hit planes before they take off is good fun as well. I would say the only not fun aspect of tanks is the incredibly slow speed compared to flying. When I am on a long drive toward a target area, I usually go to an outside view and use the time to admire the details of the models and take screenshots.

Well, try it on full realism, you can only use the periscopes or open the hatch, if there are several tanks and infantry is getting very hectic ?
Mac_Messer Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 IMO anyone that likes visiting museums featuring WWII tanks also would like to operate them in real life. And since that is nonimally impossible, we do it in the virtual world. Now if you can drive your tank with 4 other online pals to get to that objective, while screaming for air cover from IL2/Ju87 attacks is what excites me the most. I guess it`s also a bit personal, since in real life of all sorts of sport I like team based games the most. Single achievement is great but nothing beats joint strive and success. 2

That reminds me of a mission played in Steel Beast. I had to rush forward into a covered ambush position behind a small hill and woods. It was pre-dawn. I got into position and turned off the engine so I could 'hear' the approaching enemy reinforcement convoy. I let over half of the convoy drive by and then opened up on the lead vehicles. Chaos ensued. I ended up destroying the entire convoy. Great feeling of accomplishment. Unfortunately, we cannot 'currently' approximate such an experience because the AI controlled vehicles can spot through hills and woods. As such, there can be no sneaking up or hiding in ambush. Hopefully with the upcoming new map and AI line of sight implementation we will be able to employ some real tactical tank tactics. Edited August 2, 2018 by Thad 1 4

This thing exactly. I always had a fascination with tanks owning multiple books on the issue. I used to play theatre of war from the tank commander's cupola perspective and it was the first game I moded creating a more believable gun penetration table. Warthunder just doesn't cut it for me and T-34 vs Tiger was just disappointing. Never tried Steel Beasts but hear it is the go to sim for modern tank warfare and from what I have seen it looks spectacular. Have really high hopes for this sim. Can't wait for the dynamic campaign.
JaffaCake Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Besides what everyone else had said I only fear that the CAS can take out a lot of the fun from the tanks in IL2. Imagine an intense tank fight - how long it takes to reach the sweet spot - all of that investment for getting a good position - only to get bombed by another kamikaze bomber. Somewhat the reason why I find MP bomber missions can be very discouraging - you spend 30 minutes to climb to 5k only to get shot down the moment you leave the friendly airspace because enemy fighters like hanging around at 7-8k.
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Because blowing things up is ever so sweet.. ? and while i am a little crazy im not crazy enough to do it IRL..
OrLoK Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Tanks use a different mindset and tactic to planes, hopefully in them I'll have a chance against a real Person in MP. I'll never do it in a plane I like being part of a big push in a combined arms scenario, If I had my way we'd have jeeps too. As to CAS, once we get mobile AA we ground pounders can be a real threat. (Id also like to see AA MGs on tanks too) 1

I want to roll down the gentle steps of the motherland with the glorious VVS covering my advance while I listen to Krasnaya Armiya on my sound system blasting the capitalist scum in my SU 152 (honestly, I am looking forward to this machine). Although the only thing that bugs me is the inclusion of the Ferdinand instead of the StuG III. that thing was the most produced AFV by Germany and it's inclusion would make future scenarios easier as you can scale it up and down through the several mods (same as the PZ III and IV).
BladeMeister Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 (edited) You can run [Edited] over & Blow [Edited] up. Who wouldn't like that? Just buy it to support the Devs in the hope that we get to the Pacific,Italy, Berlin......? S!Blade<>< Edited August 3, 2018 by Bearcat Language
Nil Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 I am not into tanks, but sometimes I play tanks and I get some pleasure, It is nice to see the battlefield from different perspective and to have a powerful canon! Bang!
Voidhunger Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Just look at this. What a beauty! Cramped space, roaring engine, smell of gasoline and burning flesh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsodIneQGzI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl0TQ8XR4g4
Swing Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 I've just play online in a Tiger on a server with plane and tanks...The Tanks are a great addition to the game...interaction between players on the ground and in the sky are a new sensation…(i have shot down a IL2 with my 88mm...a lot of fun…...lol…) ...i can't wait for futur online campaign with tanks and plane...
Voidhunger Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 offtopic: I cant wait to be hit with this ? I really like this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_aDMqFrUV8

If you ask this question for yourself, tanks are probably not for you

Many people imagine tanks as impregnable fortresses that can weather any storm. However, they're really quite vulnerable. In fact, a single shot from the correct angle is usually all it takes. You're staring through the small viewports with the hope that you'll see the enemy before he sees you. That's something that aircraft don't really offer. Although aerial ambushes do happen sometimes, the tension only increases briefly during engagements. In a tank, you can easily spend hours expecting to get shot at any moment by the enemy hiding in the trees. Of course, this requires a functional game.

I wasn't asking myself of this question at all, just simply pointing out how silly that snip of your comment reads, considering that there is no AFV crewman in-game. I think we're done.

Hotschi48 Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 I tried the free T-34/76 in the QMB just out of curiosity - and actually like what I saw. It's good fun to plan an ambush, looking for both good cover and good firing positions - and wait for enemies to appear. I purchased this Early Access title just right now to see how the other KV-1 performs and like it as well. But after destroying a couple enemy tanks, I drove that thing down a hillside - and turned it upside down in the end....
Thad Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 Just a training accident. They'll deduct any damages out of your pay. ?

Well....yes, but imagine how effective at least the german 2cm AA single gun will be shooting at IL-2s and especially the allmighty Pe-2. If it was the 2cm Flak Vierling, the chance of downing one of them would be more imaginable. Don't forget, the AA vehicles will have to stay some meters behind the tanks, otherwise they will be a pretty easy prey for the opposite tanks. Edited August 8, 2018 by Yogiflight

Pict Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 (edited) Ever since I was shot down by a tank in IL-2 classic. one round from it's main gun chopping my tail off... it's been my holy grail to shoot down a plane with a tank in the same way Edited August 8, 2018 by Pict
Bundook Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Must admit I've had a "thing" for the Tiger 1 ever since I saw "Kelly's Heroes" as a little kid. I've set Tank Crews up so I can voice-control my driver (in German and Russian) and order them about while I command from the gunners position. I'm having a blast - literally ("Panzergranate laden!...Feuer!" ) and looking forward to seeing Tank Crews develop over time. I just wish I understood the mission editor so I could make some decent tank missions. BTW: Otto Carius in "Tigers in the Mud" says his gunner actually shot down an enemy plane with the main gun on his Tiger. He aimed along their flight path and fired two rounds. The second one was a hit and the plane crashed. 1 1
SCG_Slater Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 I've posted different videos from steel fury, only to show how intense and fun tank simulators can be, I like the simulation part, and just like the flight simulation part, I like when it is all simulated however I do not need to do all the micro management like in DCS if I want to do some combat.
Preacherman Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 Apart from a genuine fascination of those steel beasts I like the mere driving, the tactical use of landscape and the aiming part. Aiming manually taking into Account distance and wind can be very satisfying. Plus the battle is slow paced compared to modern warfare like in Arma, where you are one shot from an unvisible tank five Km away Slater, where did you get Steel Fury? I thought its unavailable I only played the demo.

I just hope TC will be just as immersive as SF.
GreenSocialist Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 (edited) I like tanks for the combination of destruction-power-trip and immersive nature walk. The slow, heavy drive through thick grass, rippling in the wind - as tension builds knowing you're getting close. Finally climaxing in house-destroying blasts and hellish jets of flame as you clash - black smoke blotting out the sun, only charred rubble and timber remaining. It makes for the perfect contrast from the freedom and elegance of flying. Edited September 30, 2018 by GreenSocialist 1
Oubaas Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Just go ahead and buy Tank Crew. Think of the tanks as airplanes with extremely high rotation speeds. Then go dogfight the other airplanes with extremely high rotation speeds. But don't eat apricots if you're going to play Tank Crew. I heard about a guy who ate apricots and then played Tank Crew. About thirty seconds into his first mission, his motherboard went up in smoke and took his RAM modules and graphics card with it.
Adler23FalkeAuge Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 (edited) Let's see . . . Tanks don't crash on take off or landing. Tanks don't stall. The air war seems pretty sterilized compared to the nitty gritty on the ground. The details are amazing - the houses, the sycamores, carts, wells, hay mounds, the barking dogs . . . Nothing quite like it in the air. And there's just something about staring down the barrel of a T34 . . . Or a "run & gun" through Zarubovka in Pz.Kpfw.III . . . Or taking on a column of KV-1s! (I know it's not a fair fight . . .) Seriously, my ability to empathize with the poor SOBs that had to fight in these things . . . I think I would have preferred the infantry to climbing into the belly of a cold steel beast in the Russian winter . . . and the noise! What's it feel like inside a Tiger turret when the 88 goes off? Unimaginable! Edited October 3, 2018 by Adler23FalkeAuge Added comment
