Standalone DServer Download

I requested and after about a week received a DServer key, which I activated on a separate new account. Following the manual, I log-in on the DServer account, click Profile/Download, but this just goes to the game downloader page. If I click 'Download' it downloads the updater which will download the entire game, not a standalone Dserver. Is this procedure outdated or have I missed something?

The DServer account download is a stripped-down version of the game that includes a DServer. If you open the launcher and click play, the game starts but you cannot fly anything. However, you need to run the launcher whenever they update Il2 Sturmovik so that the separate DServer is updated too.

When I run the launcher in the downloaded package, it starts to download the full 8.99 Gigs of the game.

That's what it should do. Perhaps "stripped-down" is the wrong term. The download has limited functionality. I think the DServer needs to access the game code.

The Games Entire Size on Disk is like 34.2GB (full download is 16.5GB Compressed?

The 9GB download is rather stripped down, It just contains the maps/models/files needed to create & host a server. (which is a lot)
No point in them only uploading Dserver.Exe as you need the rest to run it.

If You already have the full game installed, Then it comes with Dserver.exe (for all of us)
If you dont have the game installed you will obviously need all the files to run server (9gb compressed)
