[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Hey all, please don’t hate me for bringing up “the bar” again, but with the tank periscope function, couldn’t that be used as “refraction” for armoured windscreens on selective aircraft?? The periscopes are quite awesome... I’ve never seen it in a sim before! 2
kissklas Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 (edited) I havent yet tried the periscopes, so I didn't want to answer. If the periscope is just is "mode" that you can switch to, then it is just a case of renderin git on a seperate camera. If it's projected onto a 3d surface in the tank you need a camera to render it onto a uv mapped piece of geometry somewhere in the tank, and if you want a glass surface in a cockpit to display a refraction i think a material shader would be the best option. Expensive, yes. Expensive for VR? Oh god. You need to render a texture of everything behind to a surface as often as everything else, in stereo. That is lot of rendering. In the near future though? Yes! Shaders that does this in various ways already exists. But it needs to be viable with current mainstream tech, and as of now that would be mid range hardware AND vr headsets. Believe me, I'm on a 970 overclocked to take off, and an oculus rift. If someone has better ideas in terms of possible solutions that would be cool to hear. Im a 3D guy and my shader knowledge is fairly limited. Edited July 26, 2018 by kissklas
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 The periscopes currently function like the mirrors seem to, projected onto a 3d surface.

I’ve never seen it in a sim before! dont have tanks so dont know how that periscop effect looks, but anything that makes refraction effecting all airplanes and not just one type like its now in game is big improvment from what we have now. In game its like laws of physics works only when you sit in 190s cockpit, but not in other airplanes that in real acounted for it also. It will be interesting to see if they will work correctly in 262 cockpit, as its another iconic airplane with big fan group and big glass on angle and big bars all around you
