Hey guys,

Just found this awesome looking project on Kickstarter and backed it for the first time i've done anything on kickstarter. Looks pretty amazing, realistic medieval combat game, mount and blade style from what it looks like.

Thought it might tickle you fly boys fancy, definitely did for me.

Worth a look.

Oooooohhh that does look promising. If only my economy wasn't still tanking....

Looks amazing! Thanks for the heads up!

Looks fine at first look.... but a full world sand box of 9 km2 (3km x 3km)?...... it's a joke?

eek, didn't look at the size of the map! Can't do much with that then, a shame :(

Posted

Yeah that does seem small. Especially if they also strive for realism in the way the world is structured

The small map is only for Act 1, which costs 15£. Act 2 and 3 will have a larger map.

Release is for december 2015 so we'll have to wait and see in any case.

The devs worked on games like Operation Flashpoint, Mafia and Arma, so I expect a good size, at least.

I think the 3x3 km map is actually your fief, while other locations will not be big maps (as they talk about castles etc.)

If it's a good reproduction of a manor and its surrounding buildings and fields full of workers, then I'm happy to support it.

IMO it's better to have something smaller but really immersive than a bigger map full of similar places (I didn't like Oblivion and Skyrim, but I loved Morrowind).

Nope, 9 km2 is the full world (for act I, nothing is said for the sequels... if any), and that's what they call "huge". It's writen black on white:

"Cryengine allows us to quickly create huge areas of landscape. The world covers approx. 9 sq km2 (3.5 sq. miles), with a sprawling city, vast forests, majestic castles, and dozens of villages and hamlets devastated by war."

Moreover, you don't get anything but Act I, for pledges below dukes (200$). So until Earl Pledge (100$), the "huge" 3km x 3km world is all you'll get.

No need to guess when everything's is clearly written.

Surely it's a mistake.

How can you have "vast forests, majestic castles, and dozens of villages and hamlets" in an area 3.5 sq miles?!?

I was thinking that too; but shouldn't they have already corrected it?

Anyway I would still prefer a small map full of life followed by some closed locations; if I must visit the castle of the king or the duke I really don't care if I must have to spend the time travelling to that location.

That's the reason I loved "Game Of Thrones" RPG: some small locations but with an amazing plot and really good characterizations.

I received Update #1 some minutes ago:

So we finally let the cat out of the bag and now everything is in your hands. So far it looks beyond-our-wildest-dreams-kind of good. We are very grateful for your support and for the amazing response we got! It’s a great feeling of satisfaction for all of us to read that watching our trailer gave you goose bumps or that this is the game you’ve been waiting for your whole life. We’ll do our best not to disappoint you!

We also try to reply to your emails as fast as we can and clarify all possible issues. And as we are happy enough to expect to reach our original goal soon, we also work on our stretch goals.

We are planning video updates about important gameplay elements. We want to show our character editor and how you can use it to customize your character. There will be more info about the combat system and you will see how it looks in the latest version of Cryengine. Then we want to show you how our world looks like and what its real-world counterparts are. And by the end of the campaign we have a big surprise planned. If you don’t want to miss anything, watch our TwitterFacebookand YouTube channel.

Surely it's a mistake.

Could be. It's repeated twice, but it still could be a mistake.

I have no time to dig into the comments and to see if someone asked the question (and if it got any answer).

I would be curious to know if it's a mistake or not. Actually, I was ready to pledge... but this stopped me cold.

Pledged €36, way too tempting to miss even with small map :) Thank you Zoring for heads up!

I watched the video, and it's a little bit more clear. Act 1 will only be on the small map (9km2), and Act II will be on a bigger map 9 month later.

Despite the little map I finally also pledged 30€

Game looks promising, wery promising. And they all redy made the goal 27 days before the dead line. I guess there is a bright future in  front of thise game.

Mh. 3x3 km seems small. On the other hand I am happy that it's not 30x30 km - considering that it is highly unlikely that they will create playable cars, tanks or planes ...

Posted

Well 30 km is only 6 hours at sustained walk and 3 hours with a good horse. I hope Act II or III will depict something like a "real" medieval small kingdom... so something like 50km x 50km.

If not, it would not qualify as "world".

Posted

If we really should get a small kingdom, it should be rather 500 x 500 .... 50 x 50 is probably just the size of a duchy ...

But the issue is also "what" to insert in those 30x30 km. IMO too big maps are bad for the content... I prefer 30 good NPCs and objective than 200 faint ones and you are going to see the same objects, same places, same buildings.

One thing I really hate of Skyrim is the fact you are going to meet new NPCs (who assigns new missions) every 200m, and at last you are going from A to B and vice versa losing the focus on what is really important for the story.

I like to have less freedom to move around, but more choices with the real important things (like the main mission).

I don't. Game claustrophobia is what took me away from FPS.

So I guess you have not bought Bioshock Infinity.  :(

Such a great story and amazing graphics.

BTW, the dev studio answered the mail where I asked if the 9 km2 was a mistake.

****

each Act comes with its own maps. You may be inetersted in this older blog post of ours
http://warhorsestudios.cz/index.php?page=blog&entry=blog_011&lang=en
and particularly in this image
http://warhorsestudios.cz/pages/blog/img/blog_011_7.jpg

So as you can see 9 km2 is bigger than it seems. Whe think that this size is ideal for creating world of the qualities we have in our minds. Big enough but not too big to force us to create generic content.

****

I checked the links, and so not only it's not a mistake, but it also seems that maps for Act II and III will not be significantly larger. It will definitivelly be a small world (called for bizare reasons "huge" by the dev) As an exemple, the "empire capital" will be 15 houses and 30 NPC... (kind of Skyrim compression, even if the devs tell they don't do compression...)

I'm a bit disapointed.... but well... 30€ is not much, maybe this will still untertain me a few hours.

Thanks for sharing Rama.

So it's a little smaller than the Oblivion map. Probably it's good for a Noble's land and a pair of his vassals' manors. Let's hope in the content.

Posted (edited)

I was especially unimpressed by their claim that the "average RPG" uses a map where "everything is compressed so that every ten metres you could find something fantastic or at least could be attacked by a monster every ten seconds"

That's exactly my experience with Skyrim and Oblivion (with time and distance multiplied by 10).  ;)

Stalker was really bad about this matter, IMO. Great areas with respawning enemies so that I always short of ammo.

Btw, from Extreme's link, the 15 house, 30 npc quote is what the dev referred to as an average RPG. Not what they are aiming for.

Anyway the KS is funded so there's no rush to help this project, if one is sitting on the fence. :-) And it looks like they added a 18€ purchase option for act I (digital only download. )

Corrected the blog link

Yes, you're right.

But looking at the video, the "big town" will not be much larger... maybe 30 houses?

Posted (edited)

The castle town? Yes, looked like that. Playfield looks like countryside, villages, small castle town.

But re-reading that passage, I think his point was that it doesn't make sense if your RPG has a great empire with a great emperor, but his capital is a small city of 15 houses with 30 inhabitant

Meanwhile, none of the imperial guards have done anything about the monsters 10 seconds outside the gate, and behind a hill 500 metres away, there's a demon gate (common scene in MMORPGs.)

Btw from the flags, it looks like the story involves the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia and Poland.

Pledged on the simple principles of: sandbox + medieval simulation.

So far nothing compares to M&Blade and all previous projects on kickstart went no where.

Medieval sim, aside from the story, mechanics for interaction ( loved the burglar animation cutting the purse ) is all about horsemanship and proper combat including use of bows. If done wrong everything else fails for me.

Map maybe small indeed, but i'm intrigued to see what they conjure with the sandbox mechanics and combat flow.

Regarding the worries about the size, it's worth noting that TES Oblivion's map isn't that much bigger than the KC:D...

Already pledged, this one I'm looking forward to alot! I'm finding I really like the whole kickstarter thing, I've pledged to the Mandate as well (missed the boat on DCS WWII).

It's already reached the amount they need as well, so what's being pledged only makes the game better. I'm really impressed with the environment as well... My only concern is that it's just gonna be scrum in the middle when it comes to battles, I want to see some tactics as well. (since this is the time of the rebirth of infantry tactics...)

Also, check out the vid linked above, the map suddenly looks a lot big after viewing it.

It relly looks wery good. 1 thing i dont like it there will be only first person , and there is no 3rd person wich is the sahem , when u cann have so much Character customisation.

But the game have lots of potencional.

Character customisation looks pretty impressive

That looks very neat!

This looks really great. I hope the physics will be up to the graphic standards they are setting there like heavy armor being really heavy but also vulnerable to crossbows or longbows ...

Any chance theat sombady ho preordered the game ask about the 3rd person. It would be relly cool to have a 3rd person view with all player character customisation. Both 3rd and 1 person would be a best thing.

Awesome!

That bow kill animation at 5:20 was well done. Interesting to see the finished product.

I don't. Game claustrophobia is what took me away from FPS.

Couldn't agree more :) Can't play any FPS games anymore, especially "story-driven" ones that force you down a specific route and give you no liberty at all.

Looks amezing, but i would still love it to have both 1st and 3rd person view. I mean they all redy have it in the game , and it looks relly good , they only need to implement it like in skyrim. And the big battle scene, wow.

Love it when the dev said 'while we don't have dragons we do have.......chickens'
