Finkeren Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 It occured to me, that 3 days ago marked the 100th anniversary of the raid on the Zeppelin base at Tønder in southern Jutland (then part of Imperial Germany - but formerly and currently part of my own country, Denmark) on July 19th 1918. It was significant being the first air raid in history launched from an aircraft carrier, the converted cruiser “Furious”. The raid was a fairly spectacular success, when the 7 Sopwith Camels caught the Zeppelin base totally by surprise and managed to destroy 2 airships and a balloon. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tondern_raid 1 1
unreasonable Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 An interesting snippet of history. I particularly like the photo of the Camels fenced in on the deck of HMS Furious to prevent them wandering off.
