Sad news today, Geoffrey Wellum has died.

How sad. He always seemed such a charming chap and spoke very honestly and compellingly about his experiences. A great book as well.

I'm really saddened by that.  I was just thinking of him too.

'First Light' has sat on my bookshelf for many years... it's one of my favourites.

I also have an audio version that I listen to in the car.

Sad to hear he has gone  :(

Rest in peace, there surely cannot be many more of these lads left. Loved reading first light..imagine going through all that as a 18yr old?

Us Brits owe you a debt that we could never repay

From what I understand Geoffery Wellum was a really nice chap.

I remember being told, not long after Stanely Baxter died, that Stanely was a bit of a dick.  Having grown up listening to him commentate at air shows I was a little crestfallen.  Evidently D Bader wasn't all sweetness and light either.  His batman, while in POW camp was rather upset when Bader refused his repatriation back to the UK because he liked having him around.

Raymond?

Although the idea of Stanley Baxter commentating an air show does sound fun!

,. Sorry I knew who I meant, but in trying not to mix them up, I mixed them up.  What a twit.

Stanely, I'm sure, would have been very entertaining.

I am reliably informed that are now four left of 'the few'.:(
