Recordings and new game versions

Are traks recorded with earlier game version unplayable every time game updates or is there something you can do to get around that problem?

No not every time. Unfortunately it seems to be the case with this update.

Anyway, it would be great if the devs could warn us beforehand that precious tracks should be screen-captured before the next update. Imagine that your docs go to the bin without notice when a new version of MS Office arrives.

This just sucks for people who are collecting material for videos. I can't play anything from 2017 for example...

The perfect solution would be if there was a converter tool available for recorded tracks like we have for missions.

In it's current state, recordings can be a PITA.

When you record tracks, the recording suddenly stops when the track reaches 512MB size. You don't notice this in the heat of the action because all that happens is that the small icon in the upper right corner disappears. Only later, when you end your sortie, you will see the message box coming up telling you that you've lost parts of your track. Dang - another track for the bin.

Then you finally got the track right and think to yourself "cool, let's make a video of this on the weekend".

Then you restart your game, but there's an update coming in that breaks your tracks. Dang - all existing tracks are for the bin.

I understand that the priority of this is rather low compared to other existing issues, but if time permits (X-mas 2050 maybe lol...), it would be great if someone could give this some attention.

If this game's core was community-moddable or there'd be some API with sufficient access, I'm sure lots of these tiny little annoyances would have been solved years ago already.

Cheers!

Well said Mike, this recording cutoff also affects tac view file recording and should really be looked at for this and the multitude of reasons you provide above.

I've lost a few tracks that I wish I could've gotten back from the update issues. Some of those were the little moments you see so rarely you have ask yourself if they truly did happen? That, and some of my best flying was in those tracks. Honest. I can't prove it any more but they really did happen. :)

Usually the developers do give advance warning when previous tracks are rendered unusable. It often occurs when a large change happens or features are added rather than simply adding a new plane. I proactively record tracks when a patch is incoming to avoid losing good ones

I have failed to notice those warnings, for me this update came out of the blue. By recording tracks proactively you mean doing the whole work, taking clips from different views?

Thank you for answering Requiem, appreciate your videos a lot.

Yes pretty much. I try to record and organise the footage I need from a track before a patch is released. It can be a good incentive in a way as it will help make you use that footage instead of having it sit and waste space on a hard drive. Currently I have about 20gb of recordings not used in videos yet.

I've learned the hard way several times between Rise of Flight and IL-2 by losing footage from tracks I either didn't get around to record or accidentally patched the game and was then unable to record it. If in doubt after a patch use offline mode then get your recording done.

A more extreme option can be to completely copy your installation before the patch to a different folder and use it in offline mode only after that point until you record what you need.
