Can't wait for the skinners to get their teeth into this.  It was truly one of the joys of RoF seeing all of the user created skins in all their techni coloured glory.

I'm not a ww1 air expert but the design ethos seems to be rather extravagant.

I hope, way down the road, that they will bring back something along the lines of the ROF community skin packs, loved flying in career and seeing the paintjobs of each of the Jastas along the front. (Also, it really amused me that they have a von Ricthofen skin, but it is Lothar's not Manfred, way to buck the cliche. XD)

Really? Hadn't even occurred to me to try, thought there might be enough tweaks to the model to not quite work. More so what I meant was when career eventually comes into FC, I hope that the career mode will be able to recognize community skins and apply them to squadrons accordingly, rather than us being restricted to just the, what, 15 max(?) default ones.

TBH, as much as I love all the skins made for ROF, once I saw the Spad and Dr.I in 4K resolution, I forgot about them pretty quickly.

@HillBilly 1st one is imported from RoF, 2nd is the new one. Correct?

RoF skins will make a fine placeholder until we re-do them in 4k!

#1 came from ROF, RoF skins come out darker in BoX.

This is a standard RoF skin... looks perfectly fine to me...

RoF uses a different graphic shader hence why skins appear darker in FC. Also RoF has only 2k skins which does not match FC quality.

 

For simple skins (adding badges & emblems) you could export the official skin and slightly modify it. Else I'd wait for the official 4k template.

The question is with "MODS ON" Can we import the old ROF Plane-set.

Model are same, skins are same, game engine is same.

Yes.

 

Launch your favourite hex editor and get to work. It will be somewhat easier than porting ROF to PowerPoint.

If the RoF skins work, could we not convert the RoF template to 4k like we did with 2k BoX templates?

Likely the Kuban map which is currently my favorite scenery wise.  The devs did an awesome job on it.

It's just a shame we don't have the same skin management in BoX that RoF has.

 

For those that remember RB3D, there might be a need for a new Flybert's Chateaux :)

What we have may be even better: make the skin, publish it, people download it or not, see it or not, delete it if they don't like it. Only thing we're missing is official skinpacks and waiting for approval.

I'm going to compile Jasta 2 Dr.I skin pack (historical and personal skins) for us and anyone willing to see us. I hope we may have a maintained, updated community skinpack. Or join one for BoX if it exists.

I'm not sure if its my graphics setting or not, RoF skins simply don't look right in FC as they look way too dark and shiny.

Mine look really dark too. Almost so dark you can't see the markings well.

If you really want to use RoF skins I think you need to open then in Photoshop or GIMP and experiment with the contrast and brightness settings, and learn how to re-export them. They will be different in GIMP than in PS. May take a while to find the changes that make RoF skins look good, but once you find them and remember, converting new ones will be quick.

 

No need to open the game all the time: use the viewer to get an idea if the look is right.

Never done any skinning before but I just downloaded GIMP so I'll have some learning to do.

You will: it is not the most intuitive program. You should check out this thread where the OP sets out the basic stages of how to adjust brightness etc and export to the game's required format.

the brightness layer in the RoF templates can now be ignored/turned off to mitigate the "dark skin" issue.

Its really not that hard.. hardest part is converting DX9 textures to DX11 (compression)
For the most part rest of the file structure naming system are all identical from ROF.
After all its the same game / same engine just a different plane set/ different maps and DX11 support.

I mean a good modder could probably import 109 into ROF to be flyable within a few days.

being a tester and without breaking an NDA, I can say, its obviously not "easy" even having all the raw files. :)
