Greetings,

Looking to get a new computer very soon, just to play this sim, and wanted to know if you people think this can be done for under $800?

Last computer I purchased was almost ten years ago. It was a Gateway pentium d 3.2 ghz 2gb ram nvidea GE Force 9800gt 1gb gpu.

Ive been playing games like Il21946, RO2, SHIII IV, and HOI3 etc and never really needed to update.  Then I found Rise of Flight.  My system, believe it or not, can play RoF with everything shut down and low screen resolution but it's time to move along.  Trouble is I havnt any Idea where to start.  Ive lost track of what's what in the computer world. There's so much to consider my  head hurts trying to sort it out.

I'm guessing I need to consider three thing? 1. processing power      2.   RAM      3. GPU

Thanks for any input, and I look forward to flying with everyone.

And about your question. Yes, it can be done under 800$. I am travelling atm and I am playing BoS with couple of years old laptop without problems. If you don't want to, you don't even have to build your own... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220444

I don't know if that particular model is worth buying, but something along those lines will run BoS quite nicely.

I have been looking around, starting low $$$  http://www.microcenter.com/product/423412/B680_Desktop_Computer  But I dont see any gpu info and I think that the 300 watts will limit what I can expand to.  Am I right in this line of thought?

For a bit more money what about this one....http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8393565&sku=C122-C1304

When looking for a computer should I limit myself to looking ant the "gaming computer" section?  Seems the specs for this game are far beyond the needs for anything else I would be doing with a computer.

Thanks again for any help.  ~S~

Thanks for the suggestion mprhead,

The couple of bad reviews can kinda scare a fella away from this rig.  Some say the damd thing didnt even boot up out of the box!  Very bad indeed.

Are you comfortable with assembling a PC on your own? Know anyone who is?

The tigerdirect link, only uses a GT640, really not a good deal.

microcenter link is a no go.

I threw together a quick 800$ shopping cart just to see what one can get, and it was very similar to mprheads link actually.

(But his deal is much better, for 50$ extra you get it assembled and with win7.)

What you want for CPU: Intel i5 or i7 at 3.1ghz or more (or find a recommended AMD cpu in the thread above)

Graphics card: Gtx 760, Gtx 660 TI or R9 270X.

If you want to assemble yourself, I can post that 800$ component list.

Yep, GT640 is not really a gaming card, so I would not go for that. And it seems to be a bit underpowered for BoS. Here is hierarchy chart from Tom's hardware that can give you a rough idea of performance level of graphics card http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html BoS minimum requirements can be found here http://il2sturmovik.com/about/

You will want to have CPU that has at least 4 cores, so basically any core i5 processor should be enough. There will be no (real) extra benefit of having more than 4 cores, so that tips the scale more to intels favor. That said, AMD cpus like FX-4350, -6350, -8320 and -8350 will all be able to run BoS, so they might be an option too, especially since you have limited budget.

Graphics cards Calvamos recommended are all ofc at good enough level, but actually you don't even have to go that far if you want to spend less. Anyting at the level of R7 260X or better should do. This said, it ofc depends on what level of graphics you want to be able to use. R7 260X should be enough to play at least at balanced level, and maybe even at high, but for ultra you will need a better card. I am running BoS on my laptop at low preset, and it still looks okey.

If you are assembling yourself or have a friend who can do that, then you could also take a look at the combo deals in here http://www.newegg.com/DIY-PC-SuperCombo/PromotionStore/ID-33 They usually have some kind of discount compared to ordering the parts separately.

If you look only for "no assembly required"-models, then you will notice that most have decent CPU but really underpowered graphics card. There are some deal that are good enough in both departments and still fit inside 800$ limit. Like this one here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229528 , ofc can't say anything about quality and so. By building your own you would get more bang for the buck.

Hope this will help.

Thanks!

Although it looks easy enough to assemble a computer yourself, I'd hate to make a 800 mistake then have a pile of useless crap.

What are neweggs return policies? if you buy a system that won't boot, will they unconditionally accept a return&replacement?

Newegg has a 30 day replacement warrenty.

That said.......

Thanks for the input mprhead,  I was told to steer away from the amd computers like this one you suggested..http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229528 and stay with the intel/nvidia supported ones...like this one  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883258065 ...

IL-2 BoS will run better on a intel/nvidia?

Why is this ? It looks to me like they are both good enough to run BoS/RoF+track ir at the same time.

Thanks again for your time in checking these things out.  I look forward to flying soon! ~S~

Both Intel and AMD will run BoS. Of those two, Intel option should be better. I5 4570 is faster than FX-8320 and GTX760 should be a lot better than R7 260X. So the specs of that Avatar deal looks rather good.
