It's my birthday next month and the wife says I can get a VR setup.

I have looked into the Oculus rift and Windows VR, mainly the Lenovo explorer.  So I was just wonder what other user of these headset thought of them for playing Box and was it easy to setup the hardware for the game?

I have to admit I am slightly leaning towards the Lenovo due to having better FOV, 1440 res, easier setup and supposed to be one of the most comfortable headsets to wear.

So any input from any VR users would be great, on their experiences of using VR for BOX

I have an Oculus Rift and I'm quite content with it. The resolution is not good but this is around what the tech allows at this time.

So I am reviewing the VR section of the forums all the time and the overall verdict seems to be that the Samsung Odyssey is the best WMR device currently for IL-2. It has better resolution than the Oculus Rift and the original Vive and considerably cheaper than the new VIVE Pro with the same display. If I wanted to replace my Oculus now, I would go for the Odyssey.

TBH I don't exactly remember what the Odyssey has over the Lenovo or other WMR devices. Others will have to help out with that.

The downside is it's not available in Europe but there are some ways to overcome that.

Check this guys video’s I have only selected the Lenovo video’s more to see on his channel incl the HTC vive pro and Samsung Odyssey.  If reading on forums the two top leading VR sets on the market, only in Europe very expensive to get.

Absolutely love my Rift, when it comes to PC-VR it is tough to beat. Great for other games as well, like using moderate room scale.

I thought when I got it I would only use it for flight sims, and that is the bulk of what I do, but I also love some other VR games from time to time.

Have had mine since Jan 15 2017, and not had a glitch with it at all. It just works, and works great.

Yes the resolution is not great, and there are technologies being developed to both give us better resolution, better FOV, better hand and finger tracking, without the high penalty in the performance department. They are a bit away still, and I am very patient.

In the meantime for me, the immersion far outweighs the lack of high resolution.

Having said that, in the WMR department, the Odyssey seems to be most popular among them for what we do.

Thanks for the replies

My first choice would be a Odyssey, but as it's not avlable in the UK and I would be a little worried if it broke. How would I stand on the warrenty and would I be covered by the warrenty?

Dutch, I had already seen the second youtube video and that was what made me go for the Lenovo, as I had been looking at the HP version before that. The Dell one looks good, but it's white ?

You need to make sure that your hardware has sufficient performance for VR. The requirements for an enjoyable experience are substantially higher.

With a monitor, Il-2 will run well enough on virtually any recent device that has discrete graphics. The same can’t be said for VR. Check a few other threads to see how your hardware compares.

My pc specs are in my signature, it should be able to run box no problem. I play at 1440, ultra settings and was getting over 100fps with my old 1070.

Yes, your system is quite OK to go.

Here you can find other people with similar rig to yours:

VR typically halves the fps you achieve in monitor, so you might have to play at High preset, but it depends on many other settings and scenario.

Thanks for that.

looking at the spread sheet, Box VR doesn't seem to like AMD cpu's and really likes intel cpu's overclocked.

This is true for IL-2 BOX in general. It likes strong single thread performance and Intel is better in this generally. This is more pronounced in VR. Probably because VR performance is always on the limit with no overhead so the differences are easier to observe.

Just to let you know, I got the Dell headset in the end. Same spec as the Lenovo with 110 FOV. It was on offer for £279 with free delivery from Dell, I thought it was to good an offer to miss and a £100 cheaper than the Lenovo ?

It's running really well and I'm really pleased with the headset. It was really easy to setup and steam VR games run great. I have tried BOX and Startrek bridge crew and some free apps off the Windows store and all have ran well. I  still need to tweak Box to run a little smoother, but it was on ultimate graphics settings.

I'm glad I picked it over the Rift and at £279 and free delivery, it's a no brainer for me and I have set it up to run rift games to

I am really enjoying Star Trek Bridge Crew - the voice commands are great in the game also.
