I think you misunderstood what I said:  "The other advantage that both mouse and TiR share over VR is that users of the former [edit: by which I meant mouse and TiR] run less risk of suffering from horrible brain or eye cancers after years of use. No-one really knows the long term health implications of having screens a few inches from your eyes, but they are probably dire.  "

So I meant mouse and TiR certainly low risk, (just as you say) VR almost certainly much higher risk. How much higher we do not know: but even aside from possible long term cancer/radiation effects, VR has already been shown to cause balance and vision problems in children.   People praise the binocular depth of field in VR  despite the fact that it is almost useless in flight sims since at the distances between aircraft, depth of field in RR comes from parallax, knowledge and contrast, not binocular vision. Ironically use of VR leads to reduced depth of field in RR.  The longer you use it, the more your brain is going to be rewired.

As to the other points raised in the manual: apart from being old and cranky, I have both mild amblyopia and anisometropia, so I certainly have no desire to make them worse just so that I can crick my neck looking over my shoulder.

But it is up to the individual to decide his own risks: it is not as though the planet has a shortage of people. ;)

Ah, I see, I misread that as TIR being included wtih VR. My apologies, that was my reading comprehension failure.

Everyone needs to decide for themselves as per risk. I try to play it safe as much as possible, but really, even just sitting in front of a computer for a significant amount of time is pretty hazardous for one's health, and that's basically what a lot of us do for a living.

. Fortunately for me its not a dillemma as I don't have the time, money or inclination to dive into VR.

Personally I now find trackball easier for most things and particularly useful in F sims.

Yup - a trackball is especially flexible when used LH as the left thumb may reach the left-side mod keys (alt/ctrl/shift) on the keyboard. Then you can map the mod+X axis to nothing important so the mod+Y can act as a precise throttle. Very handy!

I look around  and zoom in/out using an external usb numpad. Easy stuff since new IL2 has same pan view interface as old IL2.

The trackball thing I gotta check out. Can`t exactly look around and manage throttle at the same time with what I have now.

Never seen somebody so angry over people enjoying technology. Good grief. It's perplexing really. You say you don't like people telling you your mode of headtracking isn't good, yet you've spent literally this entire thread talking shit about VR. It's incredible the lack of self awareness one must require to continue to make themselves look this foolish. By all means continue to use whatever it is you like. But I think you've made your point, you are old and don't like new things, I get it.

I've got a buddy who is like this. Keeps his tiny microwave in a closet just in case. Yet he has his apple phone in his pocket 24/7... You can't win with these people. I bet that dude smokes cigarettes.

I have no anger whatever about anyone using new technology: what does make me angry is people who cannot comprehend that there are good reasons to choose not to use it, tell people that their preferences are wrong, and then revert to insults. Why are you surprised and perplexed that I answer back?  How is quoting from a VR manual "talking shit" about VR?  VR poses real health risks: even the makers say so. 1:1 tracking is not objectively better - it is just different.

As for lack of self awareness and making oneself look foolish, you are right: your inability to appreciate someone else's point of view is quite extraordinary. You act as though expressing alternative views about the desirability of VR is heretical or irrational.

I am putting you on my ignore everything list now - life is too short.

I remember as a child the rumored ramifications of sitting too close to the TV.

And it was just black and white then...

Then color came out and it was really going to be bad for you.

Crap I am getting old.

But still here :)

@jcomm-in-combat I was using Delan Clip at some point before, I was having stutter issues. By putting the OpenTrack process to a higher CPU priority in Taks Manager, I managed to not have stutter anymore. I didn't feel PS Eye camera FPS was a source of issues. Granted, it's not TiR quality but I didn't feel it was problematic.
