gregfp66 Posted July 7, 2018 Posted July 7, 2018 Hello, do you think, with time, that il-2 great battle might have the content than il-2 1946 and it's mod. I'm totally new to simulator, i have a hotas and hope not to come too late. So by my lack of experience, do you have any tips to give at a new player for beginning . (I've looked 2 videos guide plus the one from 1-c studios, not the manual yet,) Thanks for your answer

Having HOTAS is a good start, and here, for your convenience: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwV5RLX7mkaDy5gTIiuwGmg These tutorials will help you for most. Practise until you are familiar with at least some planes in single player mode. Once you feel a bit confident. You might try online. But be aware that there the learning curve is MUCH steeper. So it is ok to be shot down all the time and don't take it personal. Everyone that is good now was fodder at some oint as well. Cheers! Z

Hello and welcome to the world of IL-2 Great Battles! I hope you'll be enjoying your time. To answer your question: No, when it comes to raw content, 1946 even without any mods installed is the winner by far. And even if there is more and very diverse content to come for the Great Battles series (new late war WWII planes in Bodenplatte, ground warfare in Tank Crew, WWI air combat in Flying Circus), I still feel that the series won't ever catch up with 1946 content wise. But apart from this, IL-2 Great Battles is the superior product in each and every way. Graphics, sound, physics, the feeling of 'being there', especially when using VR, just every aspect is improved compared with 1946. Don't get me wrong, classic IL-2 was a great product. When it was released back on 2001, it was way ahead of its' time, putting Microsoft's CFS series to shame and rest with ease. I started playing the game with its' very first iterarion, I was 14 years old back then. I followed the game through all of its' development cycle, finally ending with 1946 and beyond, when Team Daedalus kept working on it. I loved classic IL-2, there was no other flight simulation I enjoyed more. That means until IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad showed up. At the beginning, the game had its' fair share of problems and of course lacked a lot of content. But the continous development and the release of new planes and scenarios made the Great Battles series the fine piece of software it is today. I tried to go back to 1946 once. No matter how much I loved it, and no matter how hard you mod it, it just can't keep up any more. Still, it was a masterpiece once, that deserves a special spot in my childhood memories and in the hall of fame of flight simulation. Edited July 7, 2018 by Fritz_X 1 1
dburne Posted July 7, 2018 Posted July 7, 2018 Yep just take your time and be patient, pick one plane ( Yak-1 is very nice )and learn to fly it. You can start out with simple engine management where it is all automated, I would recommend though going ahead and starting with complex engine management and learn to manage it yourself. Once you get comfortable with flying and shooting ( quick missions are good for this ), then for single player you just can't beat what we currently have with this series. The new Career Mode for the game is outstanding, as well as PWCG which is a third party campaign generator developed and maintained by Pat Wilson. You will see a section for PWCG on these forums. Welcome and have fun in the learning process!
gregfp66 Posted July 10, 2018 Author Posted July 10, 2018 Thanks for the tutorial really greatly helped me to begin. What is the difference between the ingame dynamic campaign (is it recent?) and the PWCG one? Thanks for you long and detailled answer Fritz_x, i will stay optimistic maybe it's a dream, but with extension and update maybe it can equals il2-1946, i know itt relies only on hope. But there is a saying in french "hope make live".
-SF-Disarray Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 The newly added dynamic campaign is similar the the PWCG in most respects. The difference lies in the the background and the customization. The dynamic campaign in the game has a lot more window dressing that makes it feel a little more like being part of the war or watching a movie about someone who was. It isn't a lot but you get little background details about the people in your unit, your character has a back story and so on. In the PWCG there is some of this but it isn't as polished in my opinion. What PWCG does well is let you tweak and tune your campaign experience to a greater degree. You can influence the kinds of missions that will be generated, the number of enemies per mission, contact density and so on. Both are good at different things and can give you what you want, if you set them up right. The only downside to them both is you have to work with the game's AI which is poor, and that is being generous.
