I have bought BOS.  So is the Tank Crew a DLC of BOS?  Just as BOM  or is it  a new independent game?:)

Just like BOM or BOK it's an expansion of the game and will work with all the rest of your modules (not sure what else to call them)

Did you buy it from Steam? Or directly from this website?

If you bought it from Steam, no harm done, now you get automatic updates through Steam which is fine. Now... on to an short explanation.

BOS, BOM and BOK (and in the future Tank Crew and Flying Circus) are all standalone and they share the same installer but they use an online account Key system.

Assume that you didn't buy anything yet and want to buy BOK directly (ignore first 4 steps since you already bought BOS).

  1. Make a free web account on this site (already done).
  2. Go to "Profile" the top right and then click "Download". You will get the 168MB universal installer called IL2_setup_BoM.exe. (no, that's not a typo)
  3. When you open it, it doesn't ask you for any password and it installs EVERYTHING into your PC. That includes, BOK, BOM, BOS, in the future Tank Crew and Flying Circus, all premium planes and scripted campaigns.
  4. When you start the game, it asks you for your account. But since your account doesn't yet have any purchased keys assigned to it, it won't allow you to start the game. (In the near future, IL-2 will surely have a demo version which will act just like Rise of Flight United or DCS World which will give you free access to a few planes. At that time, on Steam, BOS will no longer be listed as a "GAME" but as a "DLC" as well. )
  5. Now you decide to buy BOK. When you do, a BOK key will be linked to your account allowing you to start the game and to access all BOK planes, the map in multiplayer, quick missions and the Single player campaign. No new files actually get installed, it's all done through the account check.
  6. Add other modules or planes as needed.

With Steam, the big issues right now is that

1. Only BOS is listed as an actual game. You need to buy it before you can buy other modules.

2. BOM is listed as a DLC so it requires you to have BOS bought first.

3. BOK is not yet available as a DLC

4. Only a few premium planes are available as a DLC

The good news is that all Steam does is to give you the universal installer, update everything automatically, and to place the BOS key (or other DLCs) into your IL-2 account. You can now add anything you want from this website store without buying them through Steam. But you'll still start them from the Steam shortcut (it's all one single game). Alternatively, you can now delete them from Steam and use the web installer from this site instead, since the Steam keys have already been added to your IL-2 account.

So, in short, yes, Tank Cres is an independent game. You will be able to buy it directly from this website and it will be available to you through the Steam BOS game executable. Your friends will be able to buy Tank Crew directly from this website, without the need to buy BOS from Steam first. Assuming you visit a friend than only has Tank Crew, but you have  BOS bought as well, you can actually start BOS on his computer with your account to show him the planes. No new files will be downloaded.

Thanks a lot!

I bought BOS from this site.  There are controllable tanks in BOS, so what is the relationship between BOS tanks and tanks of Tank Crew?

To my understanding, both tanks from BOS and Tank Crew will be the same quality when Tank Crew is released and BOS get updated. The difference is that Tank Crew will have more tanks to control. Is it right? ;)

Will tanks of BOS be different quality from that of Tank Crew? Hope not :o:

The two tanks we currently have will be updated to Tank Crew quality as far as I know, you'd have to talk to Jason to get confirmation though.

From what I remember reading the two tanks we currently have in-game were never intended to be anything more than an experiment or project. I'm not sure if they will update the current tanks in game and use them as sort of a demo, or if you will need to buy tank crew in order to get the updated version.
