Is it normal that the commanding officer is not always the highest ranked guy?

When a promotion was given over lieutenant grade as I understand it. You where given a command. That meant you replaced someone or got transfered to a unit needed that command.
And that goes for all nationality. Your rank had a purpose grater than the glory it gave.
this might be a problem in career. If your commander still is there

All of the unit sizes in career mode are to set represent a squadron/staffel/escadrila.

But the German units are designated as gruppe. Which fits the rank structure (Gruppenkommandeur should be major, usually was Hauptmann and sometimes Oberleutnant) but of course not the mission design (as you would be leading three Staffeln and fly with your stabsschwarm). A/C count to low by the book but not absurd under combat conditions, as only operational planes are counted.

Yes, I get that, but the game's structure doesn't allow for a full Gruppe command to be simulated. Thus, what you are seeing is one staffel within the Gruppe, commanded by a Hauptmann, which did happen.

I think in case of the VVS it is the same. You fly as part of a regiment, but basically you are leading a squadron. It is inconsistent over the whole game and should be adapted to squadron level for germans and soviets. There is no possibility to direct your squadron flights (Schwärme) let alone direct squadrons in game as a leader of an Abteilung or Regiment.

Yes - wasn‘t intended as a complaint either. I enjoy career mode very much. You could think about renaming III/JG52 to 7./JG52 and so on but this is certainly no priority ;)

I always thought the vvs regiment was actually around 16 planes and thus more equivalent to an anglo-american squadron than a German Gruppe let alone Geschwader. Might be completely wrong though.

Nope. As an example:

Quote

100th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment:

The regiment was pulled out of combat and sent to the 25th Reserve IAP at Adzhikabul on 20 September for rebuilding. It was reorganized there in December to include three squadrons with a total of 32 combat aircraft,[7] and retrained on the American Lend-Lease P-39 Airacobra and P-40 Kittyhawk fighters until 20 February. Two squadrons received the Airacobra and the remaining squadron the Kittyhawk.

 Another example:

176th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment:

The regiment became part of the 3rd Fighter Aviation Division (IAD) of the VVS Leningrad Military District in November 1940. At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, on 22 June 1941, the regiment fielded fifty I-16s, twenty Polikarpov I-153, and fifteen Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 fighters for a total of 85 aircraft in five squadrons. By this point the 3rd IAD was part of the Northern Air Defense Zone of the National Air Defense Forces (PVO).[1]

According to all the volumes of Black Cross / Red Star, a regiment was typically two 9-plane squadrons, plus an HQ section of 2 to 4 planes, so about 20 planes total. By late 42, some regiments were adding a third squadron, so that would up the number to about 30 planes.

There might be a way but if so its not one that I know of.
Even so, the time spent figuring that out would likely not be worth the reward.

In a given AI squadron the player will usually end up commander before very long- especially in cases of fighters.
Plus if you wanted to be commander immediately then there is an option to start the career as such.

On the 1st page of this topic, you can find the post about a sql editor. You can use it and edit the field State in the Pilot database for your character. 1 for the commander.

I have been flying as German pilot, so far Im lieutenant and recieved Company Commander. All I have are 47 kills, some medals. Last flight over half of squadron has died including former commander, so I was promoted to commander, but the deputy commander stayed in his position. So it very likely depends on your kills, rank, medals and then if Commanders die.
