Is this the end?

Hello my fellow scruffy nerfherders,

I am in the Stalingrad campaign and it is around 1943 for the axis. The career tells me to either choose another headquarter or end my career. However, I have no other headquarters. This is in the "Ring of Death" timeline, which is only a few days in. What gives? Can I not use this pilot anymore?

You might have to make a little journey from the Stalingrad area to the beautiful blacksea cost and join the Kuban forces.

LOL Yogi,

Nevermind, disregard this. I proceeded and it took me to Kuban.

Sadly the Kuban terrain is pretty much unflyable for me. My performance is excellent for all other maps but Kuban is a slideshow.

Considering you fly on Luftwaffe side, you might want to consider flying the historical online MP axis way: above 5000m.

I suppose FPS will go up that way too?...

Just joking mate... I have similar if not even greater probs since I play this on something tad stronger than dishwasher.

You made career progress all the way from Moscow beginning or you started with BoS?

I'm currently playing BoM, all in all nice experience. Hope I'll manage thru to BoK.

All the way from BOM on Real PLUS flying additional missions since I am squad commander.

This does not include the 4 or 5 times my career ended due to the game glitching and saving a killed pilot in the middle of a career.

The accumulated flight time is staggering.

So I am not the only one still having horrid Kuban FPS?

Its a bummer cause I preorder everything, paying full price for the "Collector" prerelease. I pretty much consider the Kuban order a waste of $$ due to it's unflyable fps.

Your system specs?

Salutations,

Yes, what are your computer specs?

Granted, the Kuban map probably is the most FPS challenging map but most others report enjoying it, even in VR. :salute:

I have to fly career on Kuban map with scattered frontline activity for the same reason. But with this setting it works pretty well.

It's a bit heavier on system resources but generally I get good performance on all maps. Not dramatically worse on Kuban.

As the other guys say.... system specs?

I'm on a HP gaming laptop.

Its not a supercomputer, I am but a mere humble broke student, and the other maps work fine.

i7-6500u

12gb ram

Nvidia 940m.

Its actually a pretty reasonable laptop...

Flight simming on laptops tends to be fraught with difficulties. I appreciate its what you've got right now but highly recommend a more dedicated desktop PC sometime in your future if you can :)

You have two weak spots here:

1) The Core i7 6500u a low power (15w TDP), 2 core, mobile oriented processor... looking it up on some benchmarks and my desktop CPU (same generation actually... Core i5 6600) has nearly 100% performance advantage.

2) The Core 940m doesn't appear to have its own VRAM. It's got a DDR3 interface to share that 12GB of RAM you have available. But that means going out on the system bus and that means slower performance.

Also, all but the highest end gaming laptops have fairly limited thermal potentials. That mean that hardware has to restrain and restrict itself due to heat buildup and often means clocking back far sooner than needed.

So I'm not sure which one is causing you more grief but I would guess its actually the 940m's limited GPU potential and its really slow video ram. The Kuban map needs a lot of VRAM and it pushes my GPU (also somewhat limited with only 2GB GDDR5 - I really need an upgrade) to the max on memory. Moscow and Stalingrad are far less demanding due to simpler geometry and no ocean.

Was this really marketed as a “gaming laptop”? It’s far below the Il-2 system requirements in terms of GPU performance.

Its a 940mx I believe.

And yes its a gaming laptop which runs the other maps on ultra high just fine.

They sometimes do this by marketing a laptop with "higher specs" as a gaming laptop. This wouldn't be too bad with something like Overwatch, DOTA, Counterstrike, etc. which don't have high end gaming needs.

IL-2, DCS, and other flight sims have very high end gaming needs.

Again, the Kuban map requires more than your system is able to spit out. It's just barely able to handle the other two maps and hold up good frame rates. The Kuban map has an ocean and a lot of geometry (mountains and the like) that the other two do not have. That means more requirements and that puts your system over the edge that it was teetering next to.

If you drop the detail levels (not sure what you're at) you may be able to get some better performance out. You'd want to focus on features that require a lot of VRAM calls... anti-aliasing, anistropic filtering, etc. That may get you up to playable frame rates on Kuban.

Yeah I'll be trying to adjust some settings. Just a reminder for any further posters that this is not a complaint involving the Kuban map. It just came up as a separate topic.

If I had known Kuban would not preform I would not have gotten the map. I just expected it to perform somewhere near the other maps. I am still crossing my fingers that the developers work some magic on the map in a future patch. I am REALLY hoping Bodenplatte does not have this issue. I cannot tell you how disapointed I'll be if it does. I am very happy with Stalingrad and Moscow's performance, but I cannot say the same for Kuban.

Either way, It is always a pleasure reading everyone's comments!

Lets hope for some performance increases in the future!

You may run into the same problem with the Bodenplatte map. It's going to be the largest in the series so far. I can only present conjecture but that would be my guess.

Unless they go to the Pacific, of course...

Its actually the water tech which is also quite demanding.

I meant so far ;)

But yeah, if they do the Pacific I expect we'll see some rather large in square kilometers maps but a lot of that will be open ocean and not a lot of geometry for islands (compare to Kuban).
