You should have to try to launch the game directly via .exe instead of via launcher.

I don't want to play the game, I want to update it!!!

This happens to me every three or four months over the last five years.  The game randomly corrupts itself even when I haven't been playing it.  The only reliable fix that I've found is a complete reinstall.

Hah!... I think I had to do that ages ago... thanks, I'll try it!

Bugger, hasn't worked...

If I try to start the game it tells me I need to update to a newer version... if I go through the launcher it tells me  'failed to update' ... bollocks!

Before delete everything, please check the next update download size. Usually you can have the "Failed to update" error but it's just only a fake message. It's not much different from DCS update, where the download files are stored.

I say this because you can have the same error message, even if you delete the update folder. This does usually happen when you install IL2 from scratch. So, if you get the message again after the downloading process, simple run the launcher again and you should have lesser GB to download. Do it till you get 0GB. Don't care about the "Failed to update" message, just repeat the process without deleting the update folder.

I had similar problem's in the past few updates. Close the firewall if you have one and it is on. This helped me.

Turned firewall off, still getting the same message...

For me (and this may or may not apply here) on a computer behind a proxy server type internet connection, the program will not update.

The launcher needs to be updated to deal with this as, I have little to no problem updating other applications/programs.
