WQHD - Can your graphic card do do it?

Let's share some experience here - I'd like to get me a 32" WQHD monitor to fly IL-2 BoX,  cause I'd love to get a finer image resolution and a bigger field of view.

But can my GPU do the job - or will it falter under the higher demands?

My graphic card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB).

Perhaps you can share your observations and experiences here?

I used to use a 36" led tv screen with a gtx1050ti, and it hardly woke the gpu up.

I could use almost all the settings at high or ultra with no problem.

What resolution did the TV have?

Ah...not certain, can you not try it out with a standard tv first? It only requires an hdmi cable so 10 minutes, and you will have your answer.

Use nvidia DSR to test at the resolution of new monitor to find out performance on your current monitor before buying

Where do I find that? Never heard of it...?

Nvidia Settings:

Thanks, found it now.

So I set my sim to WQHD resolution of 2560x1440. Then I set the NVIDIA DSR to 1.78x (native resolution),

which should be the correct factor for my monitor (1920x1080).

The test flight did not only run fine and smooth - I am also absolutely amazed of how fine the Anti-aliasing now appears!

The aircraft and the buildings are looking phantastic!

Keep in mind, I also tried the "DSR-simulation" method when switching from 24" 1200p monitor to 32" 1440p one, using DCS as a test-stand, as I didn't own BoX yet. The results were misleading - the DSR upscaling suggested my GTX1070 would deal with resolution increase no problem (yay!), but when I bought the monitor, the actual performance hit turned out to be severe - 15-20 fps all around (oh dear...).

BoX is generally less demanding than DCS, though, so you might be OK.

Ah, this is what I was missing went I left ATI and when Nvidia. I used to do this all the time to get a higher res on a lower monitor display.

I purchase a 35" ultrawide ACER XZ350CU a few months back and am very happy with it. Resolution is only 2k, 2560x1080, but image quality in BOX is stunning, plus the wide field of view really helps with immersion. It is AMD freesync compatible with a 144 mhz refresh rate and with my average setup (R9 290/i5-4670K @ 4.2 ghz), I get 70-110 fps in 1v1 QMBs with Ultra graphics.

i have a 1070 running 2560x1440 at ultra settings and it barely breaks a sweat. I average 70% utilisation with vsync locked to my 75hz monitor. I never get drops below 75fps with this setup.

I run at QHD as well and with a gtx-1080 i find the performance acceptable. On the Kuban map and with a lot of stuff going on it drops quite a bit.

Much of the performance limit we face in IL-2S comes from the CPU. Scenarios with many other objects are limited by this and not the GPU or the resolution you are running.

It isn't much related to your setup, but may give you a rough idea

With a 1080 8Gb and a 40" 4k monitor (more than twice the pixel number than WQHD) I'm keeping a constant 60fps in every situation (unless CPU bottlenecking)

I've worked my way a bit down from full cranked up graphics though, because sometimes it would drop to around 45fps

Still on Ultra preset, but I'm running the following tweaks :

- HDR off (no more bleached white clouds which is a plus imho)

- SSAO off (never felt any difference anyways, aside from fps loss)

- Terrain drawing 110km : more than enough, 150km doesn't change much and may costs fps

- Grass on medium, just to help when on the ground on kuban map.

maxing up every available option for the sake of it isn't worth the loss of performance and you will probably not see any big difference anyways.

I'd say you should take the leap, having a bigger screen and more pixel is really a blast, both for immersion and finer resolution on distant objects.
