Mitthrawnuruodo Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 One growing problem I’ve noticed is that the Il-2 skinning workflow has become very obsolete. Back in 2006, creating a texture entirely in 2D image manipulation programs was standard. Now, most enthusiasts and professionals incorporate 3D and procedural tools in their texture workflows. Therefore, I suspect that some talented artists aren’t willing to produce Il-2 skins because they don’t want to go back to the old techniques. After trying the new tools, making a skin with nothing but a 2D template often feels like a tedious trial-and-error process. Although I have no proof suggesting that this has decreased skin output, it’s very likely that obsolete workflows will have a greater impact as time goes on.

The original decision not to have "decals" was made before Jason took over development. It was a foolish decision in the first place, right up there with the original intention to not have a "mission builder" available to the player base at all. All these years later we are still paying for poor decisions made by a small group of super hard core simmers who thought they knew what was best. They didn't. 2

And what happens when folk start complaining about the lack of swastikas on the 4,000 skins added to the official download? A faaaar better idea for the campaign would be a decal system like the original il2 I’m sure RoF made the skin packs separate downloads just for that reason. Also they were split into Historical and Fictional so you could choose either. Download speeds and disc space aren’t as much of an issue today. Even Console games/ ports are routinely 50-100gb. Swastikas would have to be dealt with by an EULA or something. IL-2 Wings of Prey did that, there was an “Historical Decals” graphics setting.
