Exceptional :pilot:

Spoiler

A movie called Fighter Squadron where the only combat flying in the 1st half of the movie shows a lone B-17 shoot down 2 "German" interceptors, while it protects a shot up P-47 under it's wing

This is a Hollywood movie that you posted in a history section...it's not history.

No, he originally posted it in General Discussions. A Mod must've moved it here.

There have been a couple of magazine articles written about this film. Both Wings/Airpower and Air Classics had some interesting articles and rather harsh words for the film. It's entertaining, great color photography but Twelve O'clock High, it ain't.

My mistake...but it's still not history.

G'day gents,

This was def posted in general discussion,

I remember watching the last halfish of the movie and thought the scenes of the P47's doing ground attack might be enjoyed by those who like the P47 :-)

And it doesn't have to be. It's classic Hollywood and has to be watched and enjoyed with that in mind. Coincidently, I just happened to have watched it myself, a few days ago. They used to play it a lot on the TV when I was a kid, back in the Middle Ages.

I enjoyed it. There was never an order from 8th Air Force Fighter Command telling pilots not to drop their tanks. They are called DROP TANKS for a reason. But, what the hell. And those paint jobs on the Thunderbolts. Not a single 8th AF paint scheme in the bunch. They painted them that way so that they could use WW2 film from "Thunderbolt" along with the real action. And , of course, the Mustangs with the black crosses.

That taxi area looked nothing like an English WW2 air base because....well...it wasn't. It was filmed on a National Guard base here in the U.S. In England, they didn't park airplanes in a long line like that. And all that concrete! Definately not an 8TH AF WW2 airfield.

And still I like it.

A lot of it was filmed in MI. I have to track down the magazine articles to be sure but I want to say it was filmed partly at the Oscoda Air Base in the north eastern part of the lower peninsula. Lake Huron doubled as the English Channel. Several WWII era pilots flew in the film both in P-47s and as the German painted P-51s. One pilot was lost when his plane went down in the lake.

Hollywood is Hollywood and should be in a movies section or something other than history, because history has no script writers or actors.

History is history...lest we forget.

Not really a big deal imo. This being in the history section isn't his doing so there is no sense in making a big deal out of it.

Also, movies do have historical and cultural value, and this has historical footage in it, so I don't see a real reason why it shouldn't be in the history section.

If you want to blur the lines between Hollywood & History, that's you choice and your loss "imo"

No matter how you spin it Hollywood is not History and that's just a fact

In a word no, not "fair enough"... I understood him just fine thank you.

On the other hand, I don't understand just what is it to you anyhow, just what or who I understand?

Mostly because we try to promote community around here, though we do diverge occasionally. Your original point was fair but after the clarification the perceived anger in your follow ups is now bordering on trolling. We all agree it is not history and we all acknowledge he did not originally post it to this section. Just dial it back a notch. We are all essentially in the same page.

I'm not angry, nor bordering on trolling, regardless of how you or anyone wants to perceive it or have it perceived.

I made a clear and fair point, which I subsequently defended in a clear and fair fashion...no anger, no troll. I don't like to see fiction being presented as history, but it's not the beginning or end of anything that would make me angry.

Sounds like a bit of an oxymoron to me as you seem to be leaving me out of your promoted community, or at least that's how I perceive it.

Allow me to point out the unintentional irony of your posts.

“Perception” it seems only matters if you’re the one doing the perceiving.

That said, there are no hard feelings here Pict. Chill out. That movie is in itself a piece of history in its own right. It’s all about context.

From that, I perceive that one guys history is another guys chipolata sausage ;)

A little Chipotle here and there spices things up. ;)
