oho Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 When I attack IL-2s they react like fighters and even try to follow me and attack me. This only happens in PWCG Mission, I never saw it in the stock campaing / carreer. Is it intentional ? The PWCG behaviour is better when I fly directly in front of an IL2 , it should shoot but not follow me like a fighter.
PatrickAWlson Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I am so limited in what I can make the AI do. As far as I know the only control that I have is assigning waypoint priorities. In the past high priority meant fly straight and level even if you are being shot to pieces. Medium priority meant try to fight back but prefer to stay on course. Low priority meant attack. In PWCG bombers and attackers are medium priority. Fighters are low priority. Nothing is high priority because it turned the AI into a target drone. My guess is that the stock campaign uses high priority. That means that the IL2 will not behave like a fighter but it will also not put up much, if any, resistance. Speculating here: I really don't think that AI routines are tied to specific planes, outside of keeping the plane in the air. What I mean is that yes, an IL2 will be flown differently from a Yak in terms of how to get the best out of the plane. However, the decisions the pilot makes do not seem to be tied to the plane ... if waypoint is medium and you are under attack then do this ... regardless of whether you are a Yak or a IL2. I'm not sure if this is true or not as I don't have their code but it sure does feel that way.
oho Posted May 28, 2018 Author Posted May 28, 2018 so medium priority is better all in all for bombers. thanks for explaining.
Lusekofte Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 For Kubanmap this is not as unrealistic as you might think. IL 2 pilots adapted a very offensive defense after years of badly organized escort. Many times IL 2 without bombs flew along as escort. The loss ratio among gunners also forced them sometimes to fly without gunners in some missions in some planes.
RedeyeStorm Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 Question. If you also put bombers on medium wouldn't they start to manouvre as well instead of staying in formation for mutual defensive support? Hih priority for Heinkels and Ju88 sounds better then? Pe2 perhaps not.
Lusekofte Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 AI behavior is a huge problem, and possibly the most difficult thing to get fixed in a hurry, I guess if they fix one behavior , something else would be wrong. All simulators got huge issues with AI
PatrickAWlson Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 I have thought about that. PWCG was born in RoF, and in RoF setting priority to high would cause observers not to shoot back. Not sure what the deal is with BoS.

In my german fighter careers I had quite a few bomber intercept missions and the bombers were flying in formation and the gunners were defending their bombers. Bombers flying alone are still flying evasive manouvers. I think that is the way it should be. But in the career mode the intercepted bombers fly in a different formation, mostly four flights with three aircrafts each, flying in V-formation and the four Vs flying behind each other.
